Help, need a quick answer.

A friend has tested positive for MRSA on a pre op assessment. He is supposed tobe visiting us today an d I wonder if it is safe as I am on 10mg a day of Pred for Pmr and am just recovering from a nasty bout of Covid.

I don't know if you will get enough answers but I personally say no to your friend visiting. I don't think it worth the risk and I'm guessing they won't be operating on your friend until he has the all clear. On top of your pred your also recovering from covid so have a double whammy. The new strain seems to be really taking it out on the friends I know and one had a relapse a couple of weeks later after recovery. I would reschedule, I'm sure your friend will understand.

About 1 in 3 people has MRSA on their skin or up their nose and the reason they test you before going into hospital for surgery is to reduce the risk of it getting into theatres as it is dangerous if it gets into wounds - including of course your own!!

It is spread by close contact and sharing items.

Since you will almost certainly have been in contact with it before given how many have it, I doubt anything will change - and the second link gives you the sort of precautions you should be taking to minimise the risk.

You will notice the last precaution - washing clothes at the hottest temp you can. Cold washes have a lot to answer for ...

I wouldn't worry but I also wouldn't hug or share items including towels - the individual hand towels for the guest toilet are ideal.
