Effects of weather - there may not be an answer to this.

Hi ,I have been feeling OK having reduced to 1mg of pred for the last 6 days, however I noticed that last night as low air pressure moved in before it rained I started to feel quite weak and wobbly. Cannot think of another way to describe it. I have noticed this prior to having PMR - might have been when it was in the pipeline and I didn't know. I think quite a few people are sensitive to this and I was wondering - as extreme heat and humidity puts extra work on the body to stay cool are there other effects.

Have others noticed similar reactions? And any ideas as to why? PMR pro have you come across any info in your travels?

Now you have posted, you can see related posts on how extremes of weather can affect our illnesses. …

..but don’t rule out the fact that you have recently reduced and the weak and wobbly feelings could also be that and/or adrenals.

Yes thank you Dorsetlady, the adrenals are the other factor to take into account.

Interesting and very important to chronic pain sufferers.

Over here, in Germanic Europe, the role of weather is well accepted - all the rheumy team here nod sagely when you mention weather effects. There have been studies confirming it - even in the UK! One German weather programme publishes the bioweather every night, "Rheuma" appears very frequently! Damp and pressure changes in particular are suspects - I can tell you it will rain, usually 2 or 3 days ahead, and more accurately than the Met office!

I’m sure the weather affects how I feel too. I mentioned it to my rheumatologist who agreed, which I wasn’t expecting.

Re the weather forecasting - do you think there may be another job option with the BBC?

I felt off and weak when we had that deep trough a couple of weeks back. The longer it went on the worse I felt. It lifted as the pressure did. Someone said to me, “I’m feeling distinctly ‘unnecessary’!”. Others have reported the same.

Glad you are feeling better. 'Unnecessary' describes it very well!

My grannie's knees were always a very reliable forecast of wet weather and I seem to have inherited them.

I get this too also start coughing and sneezing but I am allergic to mould spores and thought the low cloud had brought them all down

Yes atmospheric pressure must affect an awful lot of things.

My grandmother apparently couldn't wear a wind up watch. It would stop because she was so magnetic. She also suffered from bad headaches whenever the weather was about to turn thundery. My mum did too, but thankfully it doesn't appear to have affected me, or if it does I haven't noticed.

So I don't think it's just air pressure, but also electrical activity in the air that causes the problems some people have.

That used to happen to me - wind-up watches just ground to a halt after a year or so, nothing brought them back. Thank goodness for battery driven ones!

My grandmother died in January 1939 so she didn't have the option of battery powered watches unfortunately.

Perhaps we need battery powered bodies so that they won't react to changes in the weather? :-)
