My brother, a couple years older than me, had PMR about 2 years before my first bout with PMR. He was successfully treated with prednisone. At the end of his treatment, he was on prednisone 5 mg. every other day.
Anyone have a sibling who had/has PMR? - PMRGCAuk
Anyone have a sibling who had/has PMR?
No, but I do have a sibling with multiple sclerosis. I know someone else with PMR who has a sibling with multiple sclerosis.🤷♀️
No but my mother had PMR
No. But two ladies jn our support group gave sisters with PMR or GCA & I’m sure one had a mother too with PMR.
My mother had PMR, and my sister has had GCA (I have both).
my sister had PMR while I have both PMR and GCA.
Yes. My half sister and I both developed PMR in our late 70s. Strangely enough, we are both in remission and steroid free after a short time. Mind you, I did develop GCA but again was lucky to be able to come off steroids in a very short time. Now off for 8 months but am wary of every developing pain!
My sister had PMR about 10 years ago. She was off the Pred within 15 months of diagnosis. I’m coming up to 3 years with no sign of things waning.
Yes, 8 years older brother has PMR, his came on just weeks before mine. 6 years younger brother has RA.
Yes, my brother developed PMR about 3 years before me. In fact, it was he who listened to my symptoms and told me what it was. Having a sibling with it helped convince the GP to test for PMR. Before that she was adamant I couldn't have it because "I was too young" (58). But my brother got it at the same age and I understand it can be hereditary.
I can accept them thinking that 48 is too young (it isn't but that is another arguement) but saying that at 58 is just plain ignorance ...
It isn't hereditary - that is where a parent or grandparent has it and there is a gene passed on that causes it. There is no single gene or set of genes that does that but there are genes that make it more likely that you will develop it if the right other triggers are also present.
"there are genes that make it more likely that you will develop it if the right other triggers are also present" - that is close enough to being 'hereditary' for me, even if technically it is incorrect.
I have a brother and 2 sisters who were diagnosed with PMR, my mother had GCA. My brother's daughter was diagnosed with it, but now has other underlying autoimmune issues thrown in there. He was the one who encouraged me to go see about the pain and stiffness I had been trying to cope with for months.
I have no immediate family however I have cousins with pmr and pmr&gca. My cousin with gca was told she may never come off. She did once for maybe 2 mos then back on.
My Mother-In-Law also had pmr.
And then there is the discussion about family or self having other autoimmune conditions in addition to PMR or GCA. I wish I was not the owner of 7 of them. Most of my family members have at least one autoimmune condition, if not several.
While I haven't researched the topic, from your response and others, I do get the impression that autoimmune conditions (possibly PMR?) do run in families. And these are just the known autoimmune conditions! Possibly, there are diagnoses now not considered autoimmune but may in the future bring the realization that autoimmunity is a factor.
