I had my THR last Friday, and was discharged on Sunday. I am taking full dose paracetamol and ibuprofen, but no codeine as I react badly. On the recommendation of the rheumy I have upped my pred from 6.5mg to 10mg, then will reduce on Monday to 7.5mg for a week before returning back to 6.5mg.
However, since Wednesday I have experienced a return of an intermittent stabbing pain in my hip, mostly when I put weight on it (but not every time I put weight on it). I classed this pain previously as an arthritic pain, and have been told several times that the arthritic pains all disappear immediately after the procedure. I have sent a query off to my orthopaedic surgeon for advice, but am aware that he will be consulting this morning, and in surgery this afternoon.
I know that a lot of you have been through this procedure, and wondered what your experiences were regarding what happened to the various pains post op.

Have you had an xray since you had your THR? You should have one a day or two after to check that everything looks OK. Really push your surgeon if you have pain as they tend to do the operation and then on to the next person!
In that case its probably just your body settling down... it's a major operation, and they don't treat you like piece of valuable porcelain on the operating table...
But do monitor it, and if it gets any worse then ring the orthopaedic department.
A few days after my THR I had quite a lot of pain too.
My consultant said at a face to face consultation 3 weeks later , that the soft tissue plus a large suture can cause cause the pain .
He even drew on paper the muscle which can travel over the area ( I could feel something move on weight bearing ) and that it was very early days.
He said it can take anything up to 1 year to feel everything is ok.
He was correct in that the terrible pain even at rest that came with needing the op Stage 4 OA has completely gone.
I think when we are taking Pred we definitely take longer to heal. And even now 10 months on, I still have Physio with his hip physio for the discomfort. It is getting better!
I had it seven weeks ago. The first two weeks I had considerable pain. They strongly encouraged good pain control, rest and doing the exercises and by two weeks it was much better. After all it’s a major op cutting through muscles. Bursitis is still a challenge and I am waiting for pain clinic injections for that. Try not to worry, it’s early days. I am so happy with my strong new hip.
