Thanks to everyone who replied to my question. I have tried splitting the dose but actually found that I then had two reactions, after taking each tablet, so I‘ve pretty much abandoned that now. I think I will try again next time I reduce though.
At the moment I’m taking them at 5/6 and then can do nothing til bedtime. Mostly I’m finding that I feel okish during the day, I even managed to go shopping last week! Amazing what a difference it’s made, I’m so pleased as you can imagine.
There is no reason you can't split them into 6 doses/day if you want. We are all ultimately on our own. Yes, it's a full time job keeping track of tapers, but the goal is to function and feel good while very gradually leaving a crumb out a week that your body won't miss.
There may be no real reason for splitting the dose into a mg an hour if that is what you want to do but you will do yourself no favours by doing so. You need enough pred in a bolus in the early morning to manage the morning spike of inflammation, If you only take a small amount, it may not have any effect.
The bulk of the inflammatory shedding of IL-6 occurs in the early morning at about 4am-ish. The evening bit of IL-6 is physiological and serves a purpose. The ideal time to take pred is 2-3am so it is in place to manage the early morning inflammation and mostly in a single dose. If you don't want to wake in the middle of the night, taking the pred as early in the morning as possible is next best. Taking it all at once like that has the greatest effect on the inflammation and then lasts for most people until the next morning - that is why pred is used rather than hydrocortisone. For a few taking the bulk in the morning and the rest later in the day may be required to get the effect to last for 24 hours.
