Hi my mum was recently diagnosed with GCA and has been on steroids since begin of August. She has always coloured her hair and since her diagnosis she hasnt had it done as she has suffered with a little hair loss.
My question is has anyone continued with dyeing their hair while on steroids. Im not entirely sure of her current dose but i think she is down to either 9 or 10 tablets a day.
Also this forum has been a great support to our family and a way for me to reassure my mum x

…and just for info, if you have to tell us how much Pred you mum is on, saying your mum is on 9 or 10 tablets doesn’t help us, they come in varying strengths….1mg, 2.5mg, 5mg usually but also 10mg, 25mg…..
But if she has GCA, I would guess around 40mgs.
Bit more info on hair in general when on steroids -
hi, not sure about hair dye but know my hairdresser wouldn’t perm my hair when on 6mg prednisolone as she said the chemicals in them might interact with the pred
Hi, I am currently on 15mg prednisone still have my roots done every 6-8 weeks with no problems. I was on 40mg but tapering at the moment. My 86 year old mother was diagnosed with GCA 15 yrs ago and is still on steroids 3mg. She does suffer from lots of scalp redness and pain but still has her hair dyed.
I’ve continued having my hair highlighted during my PMR/GCA journey. I started on 40mg pred in 2018 & am now almost on 4.5. I had hair loss at one point, but all is ok now
