Changes in posting a reply - PMRpro's problems ...

I wondered if anyone else has had the problem I have recently.

Whereas previously if I clicked on the blue box with Reply to reply to a comment on the forum the reply box that appeared did so with the cursor in place ready for me to type, recently the box appears but without a cursor mark so if I start to type without looking (as I usually did) the page swings up and down and settles somewhere towards the bottom of the page. I have to scroll back up, find the reply box and click on it to start replying.

I reported it to the Techys - who asked (as usual) for a screen shot of what I am seeing! Apart from the fact Il have no idea how to screen shot on my computer - how can I get a screen shot of nothing!

I have to say I was never really aware of this before, but now that you mention it....

The thing which has been bugging me, and I've reported it but fix seems sporadic, is when you click on a reply notification in alerts it should take you to the reply, but it takes you to the top of the post. If it's a post with a lot of activity it can take ages to find the reply, especially if there is more than one to you from the same person, some of which you've already seen. It seems to work properly from the email notification, but that is a nuisance in itself once you're in the site and can see you have other alerts waiting in the bell icon. I've heard others complain about technical glitches in HU before but this is the first real one I've encountered.

Well, except I can't seem to type more than one letter at a time when using my small tablet. It tells me to update my predictive text after every single letter. Apparently the software in the device is up to date (I checked). So you will most likely be spared hearing from me between 5-14 Oct while I'm away.

That predictive text issue is on my tablet but my phone is ok, so can only reply from my phone. Also yes, have to click into box to start the cursor working.

And we didn't before did we?

No, it used to be ready to go!!

HeronNS profile image
HeronNS in reply to powerwalk

I use my tablet generally only for travels, and last time for HU would have been last December. It was fine then. I have not had a problem with any other site. At home, re the alert issue, I use a bog standard laptop with Windows 10 and until now have been a bemused bystander when I hear about other people having tech probs.

This is on the computer!

HeronNS profile image
HeronNS in reply to PMRpro

Yes, but just now it worked and clicking on the alert brought me right here. Earlier today it was not working. Same laptop, no changes otherwise. 🤷‍♀️

I had to click to add a cursor.

Hi Heron, had the same irritating problem for a while buts it's been OK for a while now.

Yes that happens to me too, have trouble finding the post.

DorsetLady profile image

Yes to cursor not being ready …on all devices…plus doesn’t seem to be on capital letter for first word automatically.

Also as HeronNS says the alert notification doesn’t always go to correct place.

To capture a screenshot on a Windows laptop or desktop computer, press the Print Screen keyboard key (usually abbreviated to Prt Scn or similar). If you only want to grab a screenshot of the active window, press the Alt and Print Screen keys together.

It saves to clipboard -then when you to want to attach to email -just paste

If you can’t work it out, there are videos on YouTube ….some clearer than others 🤔

You trying to make tech-savvy or something? ;)

But educate me as to what use a blank box is to anyone?

DorsetLady profile image
DorsetLadyPMRGCAuk volunteer in reply to PMRpro

…or something probably 😂🤣

I just wish they’d stop messing about with site -every time they try an “improvement ” to something it has the opposite effect on something else…🤨

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to DorsetLady

Me too - there've been a few changes recently - haven't noticed anything that is an improvement yet.

🤣😂😄 I'm not laughing at you...but your reply. You can also get a 'screen shot' by taking a pic with your smart phone and emailing the image from your phone. I have experienced the same as well as the alerts not heading to the right spot, but it has been intermittent. Considering how much time you spend on the site...GRRR! For me it is a small grr!💕

i am using an iphone in Greece and I think its as normal

Boss302Fan

just tried it. Screen came up and I started typing. The cursor wasn’t automatically placed in the comments box, but typing random letters yielded no response (i.e., display did not jump around).

Tapping inside the box I was able to provide this reply.

IPhone 13 Pro Max, iOS 16.0.2

PS: To do a screen shot of your computer display on a PC (can’t help you if a Mac) hold the shift key and press the Print Screen [PrtScn] key. Usually located at the top right of the main keys just to left of scroll lock, or on a laptop at the very top row right about 3 keys to the left.

Now it’s in your buffer just do a paste into the body of the response, or in a document, save and attach the document in your response.

perhaps you would offer to help us all now you’ve identified yourself as IN THE KNOW so to speak 😉

Well I can only reply using a pc or laptop. I can never reply using my mobile. I gave up trying to sort it. Maybe there should be a HU app.....

DorsetLady profile image
DorsetLadyPMRGCAuk volunteer in reply to whitefishbay

There was an App -but HU stopped supporting it -last year I think…Some used it, but I never found it particularly user friendly…

The same happens when I click on the blue reply box. No problem when I scroll up to my avatar and, I see, "Reply to PMRpro". I'm using an iPad.

I don't see how a screen shot would help anyway. Wouldn't it require having someone looking over your shoulder taking a video of what you're doing and what's happening?? 🤔

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to 123-go

My point exactly!!!!

artfingers profile image
artfingers in reply to 123-go

Well, funny you should say that, there IS a way for a tech-savvy person to "take over" your computer and/or watch everything you do. I have two applications for that on my laptop as my son or my computer wizard friend sometimes has to see exactly what is wrong and they do it by using that application. But you need that techy type person on the other end, smile! The one is called "Teamviewer" and the other is called "Anydesk". Also, after you take a screen shot, you can "paste" it into "Paint" or any other photoshop program where you work on photographs. Then just save it as a JPEG (picture) file.

That happened to me a couple of days or so ago, but it seems OK again now. I thought it was just me.

Bcol profile image

Yup, I've been noticing that for a few days now, thought it was just me imagining things. Also as DL says no automatic capital letter. I'll report it as well.

I have just got back to normal typing after two weeks off duplicating letters.I reported it twice kept getting same reply nothing worked. It appears because my tablet was bought off Amazon they use silk browser which is now not compatible. My son got me in to forum through google then typed user name and password hoorah I could post again but it was on my phone still would not work on tablet.

yes I’ve noticed this too and have often typed replies that never got posted as a result. I mainly use my iPad.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to

Same here - I'm often typing twice. Waste of time.

in reply to PMRpro

took ages to scroll and find your reply due to the alerts not leading to the recent response. Given that you live on the site it must be sooooo frustrating for you yet you soldier on ..... we all appreciate your efforts 😉

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador

Another irritating change is that it used to be possible to have 2 boxes open replying to different comments but now if you open a second box, the first disappears.

LBM1953 profile image
LBM1953

Mine is the same as yours. You have to click in the comment box first to get the cursor. It doesn't jump up and down though, it simply scrolls down half a page or so if I try and type without the cursor....

Have you tried restarting your computer if you don't shut it down on a regular basis? Sometimes this helps reset things when things start acting weird.

come on everybody. Where is your well practiced tolerance, patience and empathy. You must understand that for these tech twitchy youngsters it is an auto-immune disease over which they have no control. It is in charge and they have to comply by continually adjusting to the whims of their ideas of what might be needed to make it work better. There is no known cure and it doesn't respond to logic.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to cycli

I practised it for several days before complaining. It's called feedback - and required for fine tuning many systems ...

pigeonCl-HU profile image
pigeonCl-HU in reply to cycli

cycli, you are so right about there being no cure to this intractable condition. This condition which is trying to 'fix' something that is working and doing its job. All is well until they start meddling.

Will someone please tell them 'if it ain't broke-don't fix it' !!!!

pigeon

DorsetLady profile image

"Will someone please tell them 'if it ain't broke-don't fix it' !!!!"..

Yes but if they don't have anything to fix they don't have a job!😲

As with many sites, they tweak things, don't spend money or time on testing it properly and wait for users to send feedback (free) when they find the problems....

It was ever thus...you only have to look at Microsoft...

pigeonCl-HU profile image
pigeonCl-HU in reply to DorsetLady

Too true! You said it, about them being out of a job unless they tweak, modify and alter, and that we'll soon tell them if it doesn't work, all for free.

And even then things aren't put right straight away because they need a screenshot!

oh Microsoft.....indeed

pigeon

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to pigeonCl-HU

The time it really irritated me was when they wanted a screen shot for an error notification - how long do they stay on the screen? Barely long enough to read it never mind take a blasted picture of it!

pigeonCl-HU profile image
pigeonCl-HU in reply to PMRpro

.....and after the error notification you get a blank screen. I'd love to know how you send a screenshot of that?!😶

PMRpro profile image

Not sure if you have had reply to your screenshot problem? if not this may help , hold down the 2 keys highlighted in blue at the same time, your screen will probably flicker which is an indication that screenshot successful. Open up your files and go to Pictures, you will find a file in pictures called screenshots, your saved screenshot should be there

Windows Keyboard
PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to Golf-1

No, sorry. Asking for a screenshot is their default postponement of actually doing anything - irrespective of what is being reported. Last time it was posts not loading from the email notification, the most you got was an Error notice of Timed out. How do either of those situations need a screen shot?
