I was 7 years old, sitting in front of a round screen, black and white t.v., watching Princess Elizabeth crowned Queen of England. 70 years later, watching her funeral procession, I am moved. There are many things that could be said, but suffice to say, this old American woman grieves England’s loss too.💐

Queen Elizabeth
I’m like you Purplecrow - I can remember sitting as a 7 year old at primary school listening to KGVI funeral. About 25 of us little girls and boys feeling rather nonplussed and wanting it to end as it was so sad. The following year we went to a friends house and watched our beautiful young Queen being crowned on a round screen and wooden black and white TV. I remember the screen flickered when the Archbishop of Canterbury held the Crown above her head. I’m sure the whole world is mourning right now. RIP Queen Elizabeth. ❤️
When King George VI died my father decided to build his own television so we could see the Coronation of Elizabeth. He spent hours up in the attic building it. He completed it just before the Coronation. He had the innards in a hardwood box which he had painted a ghastly dark brown and fret sawed his initials in the front panel. Most of the village came to watch the Coronation on it. We had a huge bonfire and party in the field next door. We had that TV until 1963. My father upgraded it for new channels and even changed the size of the screen. If something went wrong he would drag out this tray of electronics at the back. It was in the day of valves, which tended to blow every so often.
A generation ahead of my husband!!! That was his idea of fun too - had quite a collection of valves!
He managed to automate his research laboratory. They all sat down in the a room downstairs drinking tea while the machines upstairs did all the work. They did four times as much work with half as many people. They also started selling testing round the world. They then had this money coming in. One area they were able to spend it was that the NHS said it was OK to buy reading material for the laboratory. They had this beautiful room which was the library with piles of Women’s Own type magazines!
Well I was lucky enough to go to a friend's wedding at St James' Palace. I was chatting to a colleague (after gallons of champagne) a door popped open next to me and out pops HM QE ll. I almost said something...but I didn't. HM stayed for the speeches. Otherwise a really fun wedding but the couple are long divorced.
Yesterday procession and service was so honoring of your queen. She was a fine woman. She will be greatly missed.
i have a similar memory but I think I was 5 so, although I can remember we were in our neighbours house with quite a few other people i dont really remember much of what was on the screen. I remember more about the colour film we saw later in the local cinema. I know we went to a children's party in our town and I had trifle in a waxed container. For a long time that was my definitive idea of how a trifle should be and no other trifles matched up to it. It may have been the combination of the waxed paper and imitation cream that made it special!
And now she's gone, and there'll be another coronation. It takes a bit of getting used too
