Metformin

I have been on pred for almost three years and am currently at 7 mg. I have just been put on Metformin as my A1C is at 8.2. I’m having problems adjusting to the Metformin (high stomach acid and pains) Anyone else out there have similar issues. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for any advice.

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a few months after my PMR diagnosis. My doctor put me on gliclazide as metformin gives you diarrhoea. I was taken off gliclazide 6 months later as I had got my hba1c down to non diabetic range. I have stayed off meds for diabetes and control it by diet and have done for nearly 5 years now. I went low carb high fat. Good luck

I take Metformin SR ( slow release) . Usual metformin gave me a grumbly tum and diarrhoea. Fortunately , this seems to be ok .

I take modified release too as I didn’t tolerate normal metformin. Been on it for years.

If my issues continue I will talk to Dr about the slow release.

I was on Metformin for many years. Then, had some kidney issues and had to come off it. What a relief. No more diarrhea which was constant. However, I was switched to insulin. Then, 2 years later got PMR diagnosis. The weight gain from the insulin and steroids (10 mg prednisone to start) made me so upset that my oncologist suggested I try a ketogenic diet. I did that 4 months ago. Lost 13 lbs, reduced insulin by 2/3 and love the diet. Will keep to it as my diabetes when crazy with the steroids. Even when I am off steroids comepletly I will continue it as it will help with the weight loss I still need, (maybe 15 more lbs) and it drastically reduces elevated blood sugars and A1c. I went from 8.2 to 7.5 in 4 months. I am sure it will improve further when I am off the steroids and can reduce insulin even further. I eat only about 10-20 net grams carbs. I don't mind at all and I loved carbs! Best, Microbe1943

you asked me how long I have been on steroids (microbe 1943) somewhere. July 2021. Had been sick with symptoms for4 months before getting to a rheumatologist. Started on 10 mg. Stayed with that till April 2022 when I was switched to Medrol 8 mg in divided AM/PM doses. Medrol because it "is metabolized differently" tho it is "stronger. (8 mg Medrol is like 10 mg Prednisone according to Rheumy). Now I am on 3 mg (slow taper). First 4/4, then 4/3, 4/2, 3/2, 2/2, now 2/1. Was on 4/4 long. 4/2 long. Last few drops are maybe 2 weeks each. Having some trouble with the 3 mgs/day. Low BP and diarrhea. We are assessing if it is withdrawal or ? Will get some blood work today to see. Important for me to get off this drug. Changed to medrol because of extreme emotional reaction and nightmares. The extreme emotions, crying alot are much better. Stressful dreams and sometimes nightmares still present.
