Has it been suggested as the cause of the symptoms they thought were PMR?

This is a poster presentation

endocrine-abstracts.org/ea/....

which mentions coexistence of the two is rare but happens in other autoimmune disorders. So does this

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/709...

However - PMR is not the disease itself, it is the name given to a set of symptoms caused by an underlying disorder and there are several that must be ruled out before the diagnosis of PMR as we understand it here should be made. Hypothyroidism is one that can cause very similar aches and pains and fatigue. Treatment of the underlying condition usually results in relief of the PMR symptoms. And once you have one autoimmune illness - you are more likely to develop another than if you had no a/i illness.

Thank you very much for the information. I too thought maybe my thyroid could have caused some on my pain but my CRP and sed rate were high when first diagnosed. I am down to 4 1/2 mg of prednisone and doing well, except for fatigue. I will try Togo to 4 mg soon.

I have been on thyroid medication for years. The TPO in the recent test was very high , yet my thyroid with medication is working fine… so they recommended to just stay the course…you are so right when you say once you have one autoimmune, others will follow. Very depressing.. thank you again… heading for a week at the beach Saturday.

Mmmm - but since the symptoms are caused by inflammation, they would be high. That isn't restricted to the PMR we talk about, whatever any doctor tries to tell you, raised markers does not CONFIRM it is PMR, at best it confirms it is inflammatory but not what sort of inflammation or where it is. And they are raised in at least some forms of thyroiditis.

Thank you, that is what I told him… then he says I have poly arthritis? At this point I really don’t care what he says.. as long as I can keep reducing my prednisone and have no pain…. I am happy.

That's now a label I have - but it is inflammatory not OA and is seen in PMR (if you read the literature closely!)

Yes - it is under active thyroid and I take levothyroxzine. Have blood test (I request it) every year and doctor then reviews medication. Diagnosed 16 years ago and at time gp said it was autoimmune disease and I might develop another like lupus. 3.5 years ago diagnosed with PMR - now on 6mg and reducing dsns method. Good Luck

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s some 30 years ago. I was exhausted, my skin was dry, my hair was falling out, my digestion was slow, and the outer third of my eyebrows disappeared. I also had a noticeable goiter. Noticed by a friend! My primary care doctor at the time was oblivious. Despite thyroid blood tests being indicative and high anti-thyroid antibodies, she refused to start me on thyroid meds! I got worse. She finally put me on a wimpy too-low dose and apologized. I fired her and got a good endocrinologist. My thyroid function zigged and zagged for awhile and we tweaked my dosage as needed until things settled down. Diagnosed with PMR 2016.

Thank you. I suspect I may have had it for a while but all my thyroid tests are good. I have been on a low dose of levaroxian for years.
