Help on dexa scan results can any one advise me what this actually means ?

Site BMD g/cm2 T-score Z-score

Lumbar spine (L1-4): 0.924 -1.1 0.9

Left NOF: 0.543 -2.8 -1.1

Left Total: 0.713 -1.9 -0.5

These are how the results are written in my notes but GP has not spoken to me and not seeing Rheumatologist until April, GP has asked for their advise but I have no appointment to see GP.

Many thanks

Angela

The t-score for the spine is near enough normal but your hip t-score is well into what is considered osteoporosis.

NOF means Neck Of Femur - that is the area of the hip where a fracture is dreaded in elderly patients. It almost always results in life-changing effects on the patient's mobility and can even lead to death within a relatively short time. That is why doctors get so fixated on preventing osteoporosis. Once the NOF is fractured there is a risk it won't heal because the blood supply is disturbed.

I'm pretty sure your rheumy will want to institute bone-protection medication - and more than just calcium and vit D.

If you want more information have a look at the ROS site:

theros.org.uk/

and call their Helpline which I understand is very good with helpful knowledgeable specialist nurses.

It's important to know that the line at which osteoporosis is drawn is somewhat arbitrary. It is considered -2.5. Although your doctor may want you to take medication there is a lot more to consider than just that number and it is worth eveyr minute you spend to read up on whatever your doctor suggests, as well as alternatives. Also there is the Bone Health community on HU where you will get a lot of support and learn experiences of other patients, much as we do here, although not quite as busy a community!

I’m pleased you’ve had your scores. I’m still waiting following my last June dexascan! Endless Rheumatology cancellations. Tel con last week, rheumatolgist didn’t get round to scores, just another meet in two months time. I was just a tick in the box.

Why don’t you ask for your scores if you want to know them? I am never contacted I have to check with my surgery.

It’s been like chasing smoke. Report lost, me to chase and find it.

Are they saying they do not have your full notes anywhere? They can go back to the hospital who did the Dexascan if they have lost it on your records. “Under data protection law, patients have a right to access their records. They are also entitled to challenge the validity of records and to have factual errors corrected.”

Thank you for your responses I am reluctant to start alendronic acid again as I felt unwell on it. I will have to wait and see what response I get from my GP or the Rheumatologist when I see him in April as I guess not taking anything for now will not make that much of a difference.

There are alternatives to AA but you need to get well informed before you see the rheumy so you can discuss your decision making sensibly
