I bought this picture 25 years ago at Dunster Castle UK at a small art exhibition. I fell in love with it instantly as these hands tell the story of life. It hangs on my lounge wall and I hope my iPhone does it justice. My late brother was with me on this trip making these careworn hands in the picture even more precious to me.
I hope it touches you.

It makes me want to give those hands a warm massage with some soothing hand cream… in fact I’m going to offer to do that for my 85 year old mum next time I visit 👌
Yes I read that earlier, I’m sorry you lost her so early in your life but sharing that here has made me appreciate my mum more so that’s something good, thank you x
You make me feel pathetic - I cannot "do" other people's feet! Even putting OH's support stockings and socks on for him required a very deep intake of breath and gritted teeth.
Pathetic is one word we would never call you! We all have different 'phobias'. You cared for your OH in so many ways and the fact that you found his feet difficult, but still had to do it, took more strength than for those of us who find it easy!
Mum was very deaf and almost blind for the last year of her life, so hand and foot care was something that both she and I could enjoy together - as well as my shouting the Telegraph crossword clues to her - she was better at them than I was!
Well by that time I’d survived Stills Disease, lost my first boyfriend who died only 26, then married on the rebound at 19, had two children and two miscarriages, nursed husband after industrial injury and ended up divorced and at the time I bought that picture my second partner was in rehab after a complete nervous breakdown so I was feeling pretty careworn myself and those hands represented my mind at the time.Hope that’s not too much information but I’m ok now 🙂
A beautiful metaphor for feelings. Never too much information , just a generosity in sharing. Thank you. I suspect a lot of us have stories like yours, bombs dropping one after the other. I hope you have some relief and peace now.
Lovely picture. Reminds me of a photograph I saw - a big exhibit in a park in London, must be about 20 years ago - of an old hand holding a very young hand. I actually can't remember if the figures were also in the picture, but certainly the hands made the impression. i wanted to buy a print but it was not in the selection that had been made available.
