Anyone else suffered or suffering with cotton wool ears. Asked my rheumatology nurse and she says it is not steroids or GCA. Driving me mad.

I would suggest that you ask your GP for ear drops. Could be very dry skin in the ears which is giving you that feeling.

You could try asking your local chemist if he can suggest something.

Will do that. Thanks.

Did she look into your ears?

Take a look at this then print and take it to Nurse. Ear problems are connected to GCA quite often. Quite possible medics have not seen it as it came out just before Covid.

RESEARCH: RESULT OF ‘Your Ears’ GCA - 8th cranial nerve involvement.

The full report can be found be following this link rdcu.be/bOZXC

Not GCA she says? Because it is ears? As jinasc says - not necessarily at all. Ears can be involved in GCA and seem in some people to be a primary symptom.

Me too! I read the studies where it says could be pmr (which I have). Ear doc says it’s my allergies which are off the wall. For me, the feeling that my ear is stopped up, especially on one side, comes and goes. Nothing much helps it.

I have had this problem for about 3 weeks on and off. My rheumatologist has checked me thoroughly for GCA (also had MRI and PET scans) and said it is not that. I have a feeling of heaviness, especially in the right ear, which comes and goes. Can be especially pronounced when lying down and in the morning. Have an appointment with a ENT specialist later today - will report back.

To follow up on what I wrote before, I visited the ENT specialist yesterday who could see nothing wrong in my ears, so at least I know that. My symptoms are mainly in the mornings and seem to dissipate as the day goes on. I have an appointment with my rheumatologist on 26 February . Hopefully, by that time these symptoms will have disappeared as last time I saw him he had no proposals about what could be causing them.

Thank you for replying. Odd, isn’t it? I sneeze a lot with mine and have a runny nose sometimes so mine does sound like allergies, but to what, I have no idea. When I feel my left ear, it feels clogged up. Keep us posted, thanks.

How can she tell?

I do wonder as part of the research was done by a Rheumatology Nurse. Jacqui was so on the ball, working with 4 Consultants

I am not deaf its just the constant swishing sound.

Luciejc profile image

Swishing sound in your ears may be pulsatile tinnitus, definitely related to GCA. I have it but fortunately only when lying down.

When I had GCA symptoms in Oct my ears were ringing and felt blocked, tightness all around my throat and around the ears. I was under the impression the blocked/ringing ears were related to the GCA.

GP rang me today about this. He said GCA doesn’t affect ears just eyes, which is what the Rheumatology nurse said, but I am not convinced. Going to check with Rheumatologist but don’t see him until April.

Have posted about muffled ears before. Seems to have suddenly come on after Covid. Trying various things. Nothing helping at the moment. Audiologist said my hearing was exactly the same as 6 months ago! Very puzzling! Ent next week for a 10 min slot!!!

Doesn't seem to affect actual hearing. Not a pleasant feeling though is it.
