It’s a long article, but useful in these days of elusive and snatched appointments I thought.

Be fair though - how long do you think that conversation about abx for UTIs took? Over 10 minutes - so it isn;t going to happen is it? And that always supposes you can get to speak to the GP anyway ...

What I took from it was “planning” a script maybe, objectives for the conversation. I have wasted too many of these perfunctory conversations with doctors. I have already learned that it is pointless to bring multiple issues. So if it is a UTI for instance, maybe 4 key points to get across. It is a culture change - no more yes doctor, no doctor. I bet you are marvellous at it.

Thanks SheffieldJaneThis plan key points then select the important ones you really need an answer to, has really worked for me.. especially for telephone appointments. I also keep a quick diary of 'spoon values' each day...just to collate an overview. My GP is fab BTW...as a junior, he experienced a senior GP miss GCA in a patient who lost her sight...so he was vigilant with me...so grateful. Take care everyone. 👋

Thank you for this, Jane. Have had a quick look and will read properly later. Useful to wave at the GP or direct them to when they get stroppy!

Interesting, thanks for posting.

Am I right in that this seems to be more oriented towards GP care? Mentions primary care.

Like to know how many doctors have time to pull out a pie chart or other graphic!

And did those hypothetical drs put their minds to why someone is getting recurrent UTI Hmmmm....🤔

Have just changed my GO because too difficult to see him, terrible office staff and not even an answering machine for messages

I bet that was a palaver. Good luck with the new ones!

Have to say the document seems rather wordy to me - I can’t imagine ‘my’ GP having time to ask me what I understand, what my concerns are and so on. Increasingly I approach a consultation not expecting support (I get that here and from family etc) but as a negotiating situation. I try to ask my questions clearly and in order. I just expect factual answers, ‘care’ has largely gone out of the window.

This is all very sad, and not what I’d recommend. A consultation should be a two way process. But if my expectations are low, I’m less likely to be disappointed….

And if it goes better than that, bingo! I’ve won the lottery……x
