I had an ECG on Tuesday. Was seen on time and was out within 30 minutes.

An ECG or an ECHOcardiogram? Different things.

It was an echocardiogram. Have I used the wrong abbreviation? 😧

ECG is usually electrocardiogram - just measuring the rhythm and electric signals. Echo is using ultrasound and looks at the actual structures by using a small probe is used to send out high-frequency sound waves that create echoes when they bounce off different parts of the body and make a picture on the screen when they get back.

I'm not surprised with all the scientific articles and terms you translate for us. 😀

I used to be a translator and the company I worked for a lot would have a mix of things. They would say "Oh this will be easy, not medical ..." - and I hated it! Medical stuff needed a certain style of writing - that I couldn't use for the non-medical stuff! And that was hard work, I had to think more ;)

I'm sure you coped admirably. One of the most difficult things I had to do in my working life was to interpret and mark four sides of A4 filled with illegible handwriting. Even the child who was responsible had trouble reading it back to me. Happy days!

Echos don't usually take long. It's like an ultrasound on the chest.

Very much depends on what they are looking for and what they find.

webmd.com/heart-disease/gui...

describes the various sorts. I had a plain echo done some years ago and it took about 20-30 mins - depends on how good a view they can get between the ribs! I also had a chemical stress echo (using drugs not a treadmill/ergometer) done a few years ago and that took quite a bit longer plus there was a resting time at the end to get over it a bit.

Thanks Eileen, very useful. Hubby been very sob and GP had heard a murmer and thinks he has a valve problem. He's to go for bloods, ECG, Echo and chest x-ray. I struggled to explain the difference between ECG and Echo. Thanks to you I can now explain it to him. He's 70 in December and is developing a catalogue of heath problems this being the latest :( He's diabetic (refuses to give up sweet stuff) and has spinal stenosis which is starting to compress his cauda equina according to the latest MRI. So he's waiting to see a consultant about that. He couldn't walk far through pain and now it's joined by sob. I also have noticed a change in his skin colour, he's a bit yellow. Not in the eyes or under the tongue but his skin is a bit of an odd colour. Suffice to say I am concerned

Yes, OH had a strange skin colour at times - and it wasn't liver even if it should have been!!! As I said to someone the other day - from 60 its downhill and by 70 is is getting a bit freewheeling ...

Love it ambassador, with my liking for red wine trying to watch my liver. Take care xx

I had echocardiograms annually until recently and they were much as PMRpro describes. Not invasive or uncomfortable at all - mine took maybe 20-40 minutes, depending on what they were looking for on each occasion x

Mine was about half an hour. The technician explained what I could see on the screen.

I had an Echocardiogram done by a cardiologist last year and I could see the screen and he pointed out all the bits and pieces of my heart. I was terribly impressed. It was the arteries that amazed me. It also had bits of colour on it. A cheap thrill anyway.

Well a Thrill cheap or not is still good x
