It’s always scary when our bodies do something of its own accord, especially when it’s unwanted. Tremors can be caused by a long list of things and a little peep on the internet lists them but the worrying ones are the ones that stick in the mind. Therefore, it would be worth checking with a doc who can do specific tests based on the most likely for you. In the meantime make a diary of when it’s worst or better.
My father had this from quite a young age. He called it familial tremor. I have always had a steady hand, but the last couple of years not so much, but I think it's a result of old age rapidly galloping up and overtaking me. When I saw old people with this problem back in my salad days, they would use the second hand to steady the shaky hand which was doing the task at hand, as in pouring a kettle or teapot, or lifting a cup like you describe, placing fingers on the inside of the wrist of the offending arm to still the tremor, for example.
Some good advice here 😊
Tremors are worth checking out with your GP but many are nothing to worry about. Like Heron, my father had a tremor and now I’ve got one in my left hand. Difficult when carrying hot drinks, attempting to put on mascara etc but otherwise not a problem. Gets worse when I’m tired or stressed. Mine's called an ‘essential tremor’.
Hope yours is nothing more than this xx
My mother had it and I did before I was diagnosed with PMR, the doctor said it was old age, in my 60’s!!
Yes, & I’ve been referred to a neurologist, as it’s not thought to be connected with PMR at all. I’ve thrown cups of drinks at walls, food has gone everywhere, so I’m banned from those activities, & drink with good hand only! Delayed getting a new carpet in the lounge, & use melamine/plastic plates at lunchtime & ‘plastic’ glasses! I often wake up with it shaking now, too! I have pain in the arm, on the top, & sometimes in the elbow. BUT due to Covid there is a seven month wait to see a neurologist in our area, & my appointment has just been put back three weeks, so the wait will be 8 months. I see somebody at the end of February next year.
I'm down to 2mg now but not hand tremors but right side of face tremors and numbness in lips and gums .is anyone same
I had a colleague with Bells Palsy, the symptoms sound similar. If you can’t get attention using the mainstream route, I would plan for a day in A&E. They get to you eventually and you might find that you are amongst the most serious patients there eventually and the wait was for the various tests from different departments. I spent 7 hours there, they were very kind and thorough and contrary to the Press and rumour, most I spoke to found it to be a worthwhile, rewarding job and they liked the challenge of being presented with unusual cases.
I started to have a tremor, more in one hand and also a lot of muscle twitching. While I was waiting for my neurologist appointment I had a UTI and ended up in the emergency room with whole body shaking, double vision, felt awful. Anyway, it eased after antibiotics and muscle relaxers. The neurologist did an MRI and nerve conduction tests. All well. It’s called Essential Tremor and I have medicine to take . I guess after this long story is that it’s best to get it checked out.
My father had a hand tremor and I have inherited it. Had it for several years. It was quite hard to hide when teaching. but you learn to adapt. If I’m having a bit of a ‘wobbly’ day it seems more of a nuisance than usual. Ah well just another inconvenience
