Pred in the sunshine

Hi all, I’m in a sunny country at the minute and have developed a purple blotchy rash at the bottom of my legs. Dr Google tells me it’s a skin reaction because I’m on prednisalone. Anyone else had this and does/did it go away 🤞🤞🤞

Pred makes the skin very susceptible to sun damage so you must cover up. Also, Pred predisposes you to cataracts so very good eye shades are essential too. The purple blotches are difficult to advise on because that can mean different things, however, Pred makes the skin fragile and the little blood vessels are apt to bleed. Bruises and large bleeding areas on the skin are common. I would get it looked at to rule out other causes, especially as it is on your lower extremities which can be less easy to heal and are more prone to ulcers if left.

When you can, either ask your GP or buy it OTC Double Base Gel - this helps your skin, but only if you follow the instructions. Another patient recommended it years ago and I still use it today.

Great thank you x

I do so hope that you either have a very good pair of sunglasses or re-actolite rapide if you wear glasses. Pred+Sunshine is a no no, can cause cataracts to grow or exisiting ones to grow faster.

Whatever you use on your skin and wherever you are ALWAYS remain covered up.

Than you. Google said all that. I was really asking for personal experiences

Hi… I get them all time. The one currently on my right shin is like a map of Africa . Sometimes they appear for no reason other times it’s because I’ve knocked it, ( clumsiness is another symptom ! ) Mine take 4-5 weeks to fade but they leave a discolouration. I used to have nice skin and nice legs, now they never see the light of day in the summer.

Well I’ve learnt something this holiday 😕

I’ve been taking Pred for just over 2 years now and my skin has become very papery and susceptible to damage. Not even a high starting dose unlike many on this forum. I’m currently on 4.5 mg. Grandchildren and dogs are a particular danger !!The Double Base cream is definitely worth using.

I tend to get purple patches on my arms from pred and occasionally on my legs. I find they fade after a couple of weeks.

Me too. But now I'm getting itchy raised bumps in addition.

I just get rather nasty blisters. I am told because of the thin skin. Also I am normally covered in bruises.

Hi. About 4 weeks ago I broke out in an all over body rash which was very, very itchy. Sent piccies to the doc who didn't think it was an allergic reaction but dry skin. Prescribed strong antihistamines and Balneum cream. Don't think the antihistamines worked at all but the cream was soothing (as were cold wet flannels!!). It has calmed down a lot and whilst I still have the rash, it is fading and the itch has more or less subsided with it. I think that it has just worked its way through my system. I also now have very rubbish skin texture and little tiny spots in various locations. I put it all down to the Prednisolone and (hopefully) things will improve as I taper.

Same symptoms but was prescribed cortisol cream to control. It's getting better, bit by bit.
