Change of Prednisolone dose time.

I have been taking Pred early morning ( 8:30 am ish) for 3 years and 1 month. Pred is my best friend xxx. As mornings, upto just after midday are always a bit delicate, I am thinking of trying taking my now 8 and a half mgs around 11:30 pm. I am wondering if one of those drinking yoghurts ( Actimel ) would be sufficient. After reading an old post, I thought it might be worth asking the true experts, before I try a change. Any advice will be welcome. Trevor.

Hi,

The only way you’ll know if it’s better is to try …..

Must admit I never changed my times, so can’t really advise.

Should be ok to take with Actimel, but you might find it disturbs your sleep, some it does, some it doesn’t.

Do you wake regularly during the night for a comfort break? If so, might be worth considering taking then….or even around 6am, then back to sleep for a hour or so giving time to get in the system before you get up and about. .

Thanks for your reply DorsetLady. Getting up for, you know what, 4 times a night is normal for me, and going straight back to sleep is no problem. I had wondered about the 2:00 am that was mentioned, giving the pred time to work before the 4:00 am onslaught of the inflammatory stuff (interleukin6). Trevor.

As mentioned by PMRCanada , might need a bit experimentation. But whatever you go for, give it a least week to see if it works.

I’ve changed my dose timing 3 times in the last 3 years. Started taking full dose in the morning (which is the usual recommendation I believe). Found that I was sore and a bit stiff until the afternoon each day.

Then switched to getting up at 2am to take my dose. Worked a charm addressing the morning stiffness, however found I sometimes slept through, dropped pills in the dark, had to ensure I had half a banana or frozen yoghurt tube on my bedside table.

Then I began splitting my dose 2/3 at 11pm (stuffing uncoated pred into empty enteric casuals which allowed me to avoid 2am dosing but ensured dose was onboard by 4am). I take the remaining 1/3 of my dose at 11am. This has been the best dosing schedule for me, no pain/stiffness.

Takes awhile to find the perfect time but you’ll get there.

I take at 6.15 on waking and it makes mornings much better. I don't get up till 7.15 so pred is working by then. Can't have dairy, which makes it difficult so have a spoonful of hummus and a pepcid. Hope it helps
