Fatigue and very hot flushes

On 5th June I reduced to 7mg but since then I have found the basics of life a massive struggle and I’m normally a few miles a day person.

Various limbs have become painful even an old break in my wrist is giving me jip. When these hot flushes come on I feel absolutely drained so I’m going to add an extra 5mg for 5 days but I’ve been here before. ( In January I reached 7mg and added an extra 5mg for 5 days and started tapering again )

I also get a trembling feeling in my legs .

Apologies for the whinge but this forum is my only outlet since my OH seems to think that as long as I can take more tablets that’s me sorted.

Hi, im tapering from 12.5 to12and its a struggle. I too have hot flushes and aches. but they seem to be relieved somewhat by paracetamol. so that says to me its not a flair but withdrawal symptoms which should pass after a week or so.

It’s not easy to distinguish the difference between a flare up and withdrawal is it? I must admit I feel so weak that I am struggling

Withdrawal symptoms usually appear pretty soon after the reduction, a day or two. While a flare tends to happen or week or so after the reduction.

How do I know when I am experiencing a flare

A return of the same sort of symptoms as you had and sent you to the doctor in the first place.

Of course - thanks that makes sense😊

Hi, couple of posts linked, one about adrenals …which could be your issue - and one about flare v withdrawal as mentioned by Hidden -

Last one about hot flushes -

Yes - but take it slowly! And ask if you’re not sure about anything .

I sympathise with you, I feel the same too at 7mg...and my OH still dosen`t understand it after 10 years! When I climb my stairs I imagine I`m climbing Everest most days!....

I agree that the combined effects of pred and pmr are the equivalent of Everest on some days ( without oxygen)😊

Sounds like your body is telling you that you have arrived at your interim destination: 7.5mg seems more likely than 7mg which is too low. It might even be 8mg.

Thanks again but if my body does need 7 or 8 long term is that disastrous?

If it is I'm totally ********** ;) Because I have been above 10mg for at least 1/2 of the last 12 years and only once down to under 5mg! I'm not falling apart as far as I can tell - no cataracts, no diabetes, gained weight, lost weight (but some of that weight gain was PMR, long before pred), no loss of bone density, skin not too bad, bruise but I also need anticoagulant therapy. But I can function reasonably well - and I can't without pred. And that is what matters.

But you are unlikely to be entirely stuck - I am pretty unusual - and the first 18 months or so of PMR are the most active. From what I have seen over the years the activity goes up and down in the short term, forming a sine wave, but in the longer term the peaks of that sine wave always get lower over time. You will get lower - just not yet.

Thanks that’s reassuring 😊

Extract of Sage can help to reduce hot flushes. 15 drops in water and it does not taste all that nice either but worth it.

Evening Primrose Oil helps as well.

BUT before you try either, check with your Pharmacist for compatibility with all your meds before you buy them.
