I'm having real issues with sunscreen this year with a bright red face with small raised red bumps. It's quite uncomfortable.
I've always had to be careful with sunscreen and cannot use moisturiser with SPF as I've always reacted to it. It's had to be separate.
This year, all my usual sunscreens are also causing a reaction. Don't know if the addition of MTX is the problem but it wasn't happening last year. I've tried Hawaiian tropic and la roche-posay anthelios ultra.
Any suggestions for a good hypoallergenic suncream (high SPF - I'm fair) or any other ideas please? 🥵🥵

We came across Avene Products when they were prescribed for my Daughter in Law in France when she suddenly developed a strange reaction on her face..... l used their products extensively when l was on Chemo & My Allergic Son uses them, when l buy them for him!
Some of their Products are unfortunately not cheap but the Sunscreen seems averagely priced, maybe worth checking out on line especially for your face.
Charlotte has some eczema tendency & l’ve just ordered a face cream for her as the stuff the GP has dished out is far to thick & gooey for a little one.....
But that has reminded me, ‘Childs Farm’ do a Sun Screen, available in Boots or Online, it’s for Children with Eczema so is very gentle, might be worth a look at too!
Lupies need special sunscreens - and I have heard them complaining of difficulty getting the sort of thing you are looking for since they now don't get it prescribed. Why not ask the pharmacist what they get?
Uvistat seems to be the one doctors prescribe for children. ‘Uvistat Sun Creams are recognised by Dermatologists and skin clinic nurses as one of the most effective products for sensitive skin such as lupus, eczema....’ My little nephew had a sun allergy which is why he got it on prescription. This was many years ago so you would probably have to buy your own these days. I am allergic to Boots suncreams and Ambre Solaire but can use Nivea.
To add to the mix Consumer Labs has examined many other sunscreens that are on the market and a certain number have benzene(!) in them. This finding goes across many of the famous brands even the ones for babies. It doesn’t go by brand actually it goes by individual preparation. Benzene is a carcinogenic.
Sorry Coffeebeans, I’m late to the party but would also recommend Uvistat.
As an aside, were the creams that you have so far tried freshly bought and opened this year? Sunscreens seem to degrade pretty quickly so it’s recommended (probably by those who stand to gain financially) that you buy new sunscreen each year.
That could be the issue. I think that some of the stronger preservatives were a bit dodgy and had to be removed so creams are less stable that they were in the past when they would withstand a nuclear bomb!
I lived in Southern Africa for forty years, and have never used a sunscreen. The trick is to stay indoors most of the time, but be outside for short periods, to build up your own natural tan. Short periods of ten minutes or so, two or three times a day. Not ideal when you're away on holiday, I know, but much better than having an adverse reaction to sunscreen.
I used a mineral based sunscreen called Tropic which has been good on my face and there is a separate one for the body which is also mineral based. It costs a lot of money though so if you find one on prescription that you can use that may be the way forward although if you are still struggling I have found Tropic to be very good x
My sister has major issues with sunscreen allergy and has tried all price range products. The only one she has no problem with is Ambre Solaire range.
Hi Coffeebeans
I hope that you've managed to find a sunscreen to use which hasn't made you blotchy and itchy. If not, you might be interested in this article from a couple of weeks ago. I mentioned to a friend how much I hate wearing sunscreen on my face every day and she remembered reading this. Needless to say, having been in a national newspaper the serums mentioned have sold like the proverbial hot cakes but I have managed to order some of the Coola one. It's horribly expensive but if it doesn't feel too heavy on my face there's a chance that I might wear it! Perhaps one of these would suit you?
In another article last year Sali Hughes recommended Altruist sunscreen which I bought and have been really pleased with. I’ve been using it today sitting in the garden relaxing after my second AZ jag! It was developed by an NHS consultant dermatologist and the company has a really good ethos. And it’s dirt cheap too! It might be worth a try if the others don’t work for you...
