75mgAspirin

I have Factor V Leiden ( heterozygous) this is a blood clotting hereditary disorder. I have had no blood clots and cannot trace this back through family. My son however has had three. When still at work as a nurse ( age 64) I was advised by a vascular surgeon - informally- that it might be an idea to self prescribe an aspirin especially getting older. I did for a while and then a couple of years later I developed PMR so stopped because of the pred. Now at 76 and on my second round of PMR I am having a few episodes of phlebitis, I do have bad varicose veins. Do you think I could still take an aspirin if I did this carefully in the middle of my main meal which would be at least 8 hours after pred? Thank you for your thoughts.

A few years ago aspirin was prescribed alongside Pred for some GCA patients - but that seems to have been discontinued.

I was already on 75mg aspirin before GCA, and stayed on it all through Pred with no issues...taking at same time. Did take PPI as well. Now not on any of them them.

But it’s something you need to check with your doctor, we obviously cannot say...not in our pay grade.

As a previous nurse, sure you understand.

Hi, certainly check this out with your GP - l take a Coated 75mg Aspirin prescribed by a Cardiologist with no adverse effects BUT you must check with your GP it’s not something to just add in yourself. Kind Regards

The low dose aspirin regimen was formerly advised for patients with GCA but in the most recent guidelines that recommendation was removed as it was decided that the risks outweighed the benefits. However - that was in patients only with GCA and according to the literature there is certainly a notable benefit for someone with recurrent phlebitis.

This may be out of date by now as it is from 2013 - but this suggests rivaroxaban for the same purpose:

Have your doctors not suggested some form of preventative medication? I think you should ask them what they think.

Thank you so much for all your replies. yes i did check with my doctor who just said yes that would be ok. I just wanted to check what you all said on this site. When I had PMR several years ago my daughter who was an outpatients Physio in London told me this is what she thought i had and to go back and suggest it to my own GP. This was after several months of toing and froing to my GP who eventually sent me to a physio who told me that if I couldn't do the exercises at home it was nothing he could do for me. I told him I couldn't move my hips either but the reply was that he hadn't been asked to look at my hips! iIdid suggest PMR to my GP who said she didn't think I had that as i had it in my hips as well! I pushed for at least an ESR and that evening the GP phoned to say was 70 and that she had left me out some tablets. I only really saw her if I instigated a blood test to see how I doing. I was refused a CRP as she didn't think it was necessary, That was fine I managed the whole thing in a way by joining PMRGCA south west and being part of the admin team and working closely with the SW leader who is a trustee of the organisation. This bout of PMR is different but in the year I have ? had it I havent seen the GP only on the phone to ask for a Blood test. my ESR has been up to 50 this time but about 19 now. As you can see I havent a lot of faith in the system where i live so am bashing on myself. I did phone about the aspirin and she said good idea as I was mainly worried about he blood clotting disorder that is meant to be more of a nuisance the older you get. However about 1in 20 do have this condition and go through life never knowing!!!! I only knew as my son was diagnosed after my son had 3 PEs in his 20s and early 30s. Thank you so much for listening to my rambling ( reading) .
