I managed perfectly well by taking my Pred with organic, Greek style, live yoghurt with a dash of Manuka honey for years. ( just being fancy, anything similar will do) Omeprazole and similar didn’t suit me at all. I now take Entric Coated Prednisalone which is even better. It takes 4-7 hours to kick in and I take it at bedtime and wake up feeling good.I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised about the absorption of nutrients issue.

Probably - according to this review:

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl....

but there aren't strong studies on it.

Thank you so much PMRproThat article was so helpful and so yes studies would suggest a correlation between ppi's and B12 deficiency.

Kind regards

Oh yes - B12 deficiency is an acknowledged problem with patients on long term PPIs. Or anything that results in lower stomach acid in general - including the calcium carbonate calcium supplements.

What about short term use, say a couple of months ???

That's probably not going to make a lot of difference - but a lot of doctors just hand out the PPI to pred patients and leave them in it for years. It was never developed for that sort of use in the first place. So doctors do need to keep an eye out for deficiencies of some nutrients. Calcium and magnesium can be a problem when on pred anyway so a double whammy

Thank you PMRDo you think you could not take it everyday so that in-between times you can get some B22 and other nutrients/ vitamins in ?

Not sure that would make a difference - the effect does take time to build up and lasts some time and it also depends what you need it for. There are cases where a PPI or equivalent is needed to prevent more serious disorders such as barretts oesophagus becoming cancerous developing. But they shouldn't be handed out otherwise on a "just in case" basis which is how they are often used. The data sheet says they shouldn't be used for more than 2 weeks without medical reason and you won;t develop deficiences in that time. But long term use is another story.

I stopped taking it and felt much better for doing so but this might not be the case for everyone and like with any drug you have been on for a while you have to taper to avoid withdrawal symptoms. If you decide not to take it discuss with your doctor first.
