Maybe the second Covid vac is an "overkill", for PMR/GCA patients.

I received my second Moderna vac over eight weeks ago, and am still waiting to feel the old pre vac self. I was down to 3.5 mg of pred, when I got it, and have tapered to 3mg.

I cannot remember ever being this tired, and weak. If I think I might have enough energy to do a little house hold task, it leaves before I can get started.

I'm wondering if we really needed that second shot, for the immune compromised.

Any one else thinking this way?

Hmm tricky. You’re at the Pred level where the adrenal glands really need to work but might not, even if it has felt ok. The vaccine may have put enough stress on the body that you really need that output to be good right now but it can’t rise to the challenge. Or the timing could be coincidental and the lack of natural cortisol output was going to happen anyway. Or it could be your immune system has been triggered into some extra activity that is making you tired. For me past vaccines have that that effect for weeks or months even before any autoimmune diagnosis. Very difficult to say what is what really.

Not it’s not “overkill”, it’s a necessity.....I had my second Pfizer vaccine this morning (my immune system is not compromised- been off Pred for over 4 years) .....and was told by doctor who did it, that the second vaccine gives you the long term protection that the first doesn’t.

Have you considered that your fatigue may well be adrenal related as much as a side effect of vaccine. ...and have you reported it? This App can be used in UK and US - and they want to know the side effects -

It was definitely worth it - because it is the second shot that is most likely to develop the T and B cells long term immunity. It isn't just the antibody response that is required - that may fade relatively soon as it does with some other vaccines and is less reliable for us on steroids.

I too haven't felt 100% since the second shot. I hope that does mean it has developed an immune response rather than it having been just a PMR flare but you can't know. I agree with everything Snazzy says. I'm also not taking the fact I have had both Moderna shots to mean I have good immunity - not until the figures are in for patients with immune system problems and on immunosuppressant medications, especially corticosteroids. My behaviour hasn't changed and nor will it change until a lot more people have either had the shots or recovered from the virus and something near herd immunity is achieved - children will continue to get it because they aren't being vaccinated yet plus the people who can't or won't have the jab.

"I hope that does mean it has developed an immune response rather than it having been just a PMR flare.." How long could this immune response last? Just wait it out? Will it get better, eventually? I was thinking of going back to 3.5mg of pred, but I really hate to.

If you mean the side effects of the stimulation of the immune system it is difficult to say - no-one has done this before so no-one knows if there are flares or what it is,

First dose Pfizer I was fine, had second dose four days ago and haven’t felt well since, have no energy or motivation to do anything, feel wiped out. Also muscle aches and cold all the time. Was on 2mg pred for first dose but doctor put me up to 3mg couple of months ago due to adrenal problems, tomorrow have appointment for a Covid test, fingers crossed it’s negative. Hope you feel better soon.

It seems to be one of those things that affects different people in totally different ways. I had my second shot, OAZ, ten days ago and have had no adverse reaction to either shots, whether that is good or bad for my immune system I have no idea. I don't have any reaction to the flu jab either but have never had the flu since having the jabs either, so fingers crossed. Not planning on changing present behaviour any time soon though. Is the 2nd jab necessary for us, in my opinion, definitely.

And with the current view of the India mutations - a third will probably be on the cards soon ...

Agree. It is a really sad state of affairs over there, makes me really upset when I watch it.

A doctor on Sky this morning mentioned the dread fact: it seems to be resistant to treatments and vaccines ... And what was Sky's almost next article? Holidays!! I assume the Indian mutant has reached the UK? The first 2 cases in Italy have been identified.

Yes it has, we have a number of cases now. Have to say I can't get my head around this craze that we all want to get away/abroad on holiday. Think we must be on a different planet in this house!!

Same here - though I suppose I cheat as I live where a lot of people come on holiday ;) Much as I'd like to see my daughters, no way Jose, except video calls! Our bank balances are creeping up nicely ...

Indeed it may have reached Downing Street. I can't quite understand why someone on essential state business should be exempt from quarantine and testing...? Presumably the virus doesn't know what sort of business you've been on? Here's an article from the Times of India. There's also an article in The Times (UK) but it has a paywall.

The link worked fine for me, he got caught by test and trace - someone else on the plane - but not until he had been working back in Downing Street.

That link is ok - it's the Times of India. It's the UK Times which is behind a paywall so I didn't post it. Sorry if I confused you. I've edited to make it clearer (I hope).

I haven't been right since my first jab (AZ). Tired, depressed, very sore arm/shoulder still. I will still have the 2nd one at the end of May but not sure whether to have it in the sore L arm or risk the R arm being the same. I know 2 other people who have had the same problem after the vaccine, one of whom has PMR.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply totangocharlie

A sore shoulder is usually due to poor placing of the injection, too high in the muscle.

A Dr did mine, but interesting my brother was told to keep his arm dangling stright down, and had no problems, whereas I'm sure mine was bent

PMRpro profile image

My arm was down - but I did read that having both dr and patient sitting or standing reduces the risk of it going wrong. The needle isn't at an angle and less likely to be too high,
