I dont want to go down the medication route, so am trying to work out how much skimmed milk to take which will top up the calcium Im losing whilst taking Pred.
Anyone else doing this? and how much do you take?
Every time I try to work out the calcium in the powdered milk I take, I get a different answer! (maths isnt my strong point).
Hello there. It depends on what it says on the tin really. Milk isn’t necessarily the best vector for calcium even if it contains lots and a varied diet of calcium containing foods is better on the whole. Here is a site that gives calcium info and links to calculating it. theros.org.uk/information-a...
However, taking calcium on its own is pointless unless you have enough vitamin D and and also K2 which helps the calcium go to the bones instead of unwanted places like arteries. There are other nutrients too. Bone health is quite involved once you start looking into it and is more than popping supplements or munching calcium foods. A really good book on all aspects is called Your Bones by Lara Pizzorno. It is easy to dip into too.
A cup of skimmed milk supplies around 300mg of calcium. You need 1,200mg per day, so that makes 4 cups of skimmed milk theoretically, the trouble is phytic acid and oxalic acid, found naturally in some plants, bind to calcium and can inhibit its absorption. Of course such things as oily fish and leafy greens are a good source too. As the others say skimmed milk has its downside too.
