I've had PMR on and off for 11 years. Does anyone suffer with muscle spasms ,? I get the occasional esophagus spasm and the horrible rectal spasm. Am I alone I wonder. I'm now 70 and female.

I have had phases of both of those unpleasant symptoms over the years, during PMR. I found that sips of cool water and over the counter indigestion remedies helped the Oesophageal spasms and keeping calm ( they are scary). Ordinary Paracetamol is useful for the rectal spasms. Nobody seems to know why these occur or whether to connect the symptoms with our conditions or drugs. Endoscopy and colonoscopy have been mentioned to me, however, for normal times.

I'm not alone ! Great ! Reassuring. For my bottom I have on prescription a cream called Rectogesic 4mg. Comes everywhere with me. A life saver as these experiences for me are worse than childbirth. Usually at night out of the blue. the cream takes about 20 min to work. For the esophagus I have a similar formula in a spray, under the tongue. Rarely use the spray which can race my heart and give a slight headache...both short-lived. I sit quietly and deep breathe v slowly, for about 20 mins or so until things pass. I'm encouraged by what you say. After the latter, I belch a lot and can't stop yawning for about half hour ! Oxygen needed I suppose, as strange as it sounds ! Thanks so much..

~Oesophageal spasms as SheffieldJane mentions "scary".

I sip boiled warm water - fixes me fairly fast.

As for rectal spasms, they too are very painful - keep my IB under control which I think could be linked.

If I experience an attack crouch/squat which seems to release the built up gas/pain ~
