weak eye muscles?

Hi. Several years ago my ophthalmologist diagnosed my right eye as glaucoma, but I told him that I suspect allergic inflammation was swelling the muscles behind and around my eye, causing pressure. He finally, finally looked at the eye muscles and said we would delay the treatment until after the swelling went down. It took 3 years for the swelling to go down! My face was all bloated for all these years, and my vision was affected by it.

Now that the swelling in my face has gone down, my eyesight is weird. I can't focus well at all. The focus comes and goes. My nurse who visits me twice weekly said my eye muscles are probably weakened. I could have hugged her (except for covid-19, lol).

I'm just wondering if anyone else has this problem.

Thanks.

Just being believed is healing. 🌺

Why did he say it was glaucoma? I understand that depends on finding 3 different factors including loss of peripheral vision due to raised pressures. It doesn't matter WHY the pressures are raised - it is the pressure that is the problem.

As Jane said sometimes it is so helpful when what we thought all along is agreed with. I know I felt that with my GCA when my GP just dismissed it out of hand. I know not a good time at the moment but are you able to see another Ophthalmologist?

I am not an expert. I have GCA and some PMR.* Yes I have weakened eye muscles. Even when I had my temporal arteries operated on to check for giant cells, the anesthesiologist noticed my eyes and said: "Already the Prednisone is weakening your eye muscles." Because I have GCA I have an eye doctor called a neuro ophthalmologist. He's pretty important in our eye hospital. He directed that I also have an eye doctor who specializes in eye muscles and strabismus (a type of crossed eyes). This 2nd doctor is also a specialist in eye surgery and pediatric ophthalmology.** This doctor for years looked at my eye "tissues." I am cross eyed. It seems that I am cross eyed on account of GCA. One of the many problems is "weak muscles." The consensus seems that GCA gave it to me. But maybe Prednisone gives it to some people. This kind of "muscle eye" doctor works on this issue-eye muscles. Sometimes this kind of doctor operates so that the weak muscles don't let the colored part of the eye drift away from what we perceive of as the center.

I hope that this helps. Good luck.

*It seems that a lot of people have PMR more badly than I do so long as I take Pred.

** Children suffer from crossed eyes.

Sorry for forgetting. I don't have glaucoma.

You're absolutely right. I got a second opinion and this new doctor took the time to explain everything to me. She was fabulous. Yes, I now have nerve damage in left eye. The first doctor never took the time to discuss the issues with me. He had patients lined up like an 'assembly line' . That's why I didn't trust what little he said. Now I have someone I can trust.

Thank you for the good advice. However, both of my eyes have weak eye muscles. But, for sure I'll ask my new ophthalmologist about your advice, since both eyes have the same problem.
