Good morning to you all.

My pmr is under control and the pain has practically gone.

however, the last few days i have had severe pain in my ribs and part of my spine. This feels just the same type of pain as with pmr. Has anyone else had this problem,

Be grateful for your thoughts on this.

Hello, here are a few questions. Is the pain where the ribs join on, just to the left of the main column or in the main column? Is it pain that is in the skin or deeper in and and does the pain shoot or stay put? Have you been doing anything unusual or sustained?

Yes, I think the cause was Costochondritis, inflammation of the rib area. Rest and painkillers were the only treatments. Snazzy being a nurse is trying to make properly sure. Even carrying shopping can trigger it. I would make a joke about hoarding but actually it is excruciating and not funny at all. I think it took me several weeks of resting it out. Clearly an X-Ray and or a Scan is called for if it’s not settling. More Pred would help, such a shame though.

I had this kind of pain where ribs join sternum when I was towards the end of PMR. it may even have been after. It took a while to slowly go, but did go.

It might be costochondritis or it could be due to myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) causing local nerves to be pinched and leading to referred pain - which was my problem.

One of the pairs of trigger points it causes is on either side of the spine about rib level and they can make the latismus muscles tight. That also irritates the nerves that supply the rib area causing referred pain and that can be quite painful. The muscles hurt too - very like PMR but more localised. MPS is found more often in patients with PMR - and is due to the same inflammatory substances as PMR just concentrated in the trigger points and the muscle fascia rather than systemic as in PMR.

Wow I love this site thanks so much for you knowledge and answers. I am off steriods And. believe I am doing okay. But this flaming chest pain has been driving me mad! Your posts have given me a light bulb moment! I really now believe I have costochondritis. It is worse at night and has been affecting my sleep. It is horrible to sneeze. It does respond to pain killers. Last night I took co codymol and I did sleep. Reading the posts it seems like it will go away eventually!

Did you have a really good response to 15mg? How long were you on it?

You aren't reducing relentlessly to zero - you are doing something called titration - finding the lowest effective dose for you, because everyone is different. The usual recommendation for dealing with a flare due to overshooting like this is to add 5mg to the dose where you flared for up to a week and then drop straight back to the dose ABOVE where you flared, no tapering is required.

Before I was diagnosed with PMR I had 2 bouts of the pain you're describing, just about 2 months before my diagnosis.. I went to emergency and they did a complete workup to make sure it was not heart related. I also believe it was costochondritis although it was not labeled as such. I feel that was the beginning of PMR which I've had just over 3 years now.

Hi. Yes! I fekt like I'd cracked a rib on my leftvside, but then had pain on the right side, now experiencing quite intense mid-back pain when I stand for any length of time. Also tapering, bur recently increased form 8.5mg to 10mg pred
