Yet Another Problem...

Hi diagnosed with pmr back in December am currently trying out a very slow taper from 140mgr pred per week down to 135mgr per week. This week have developed two large blood blisters in my mouth. Has anyone else had this and could it be due to the pred or a side effect of pmr? Any advice would be appreciated.

That isn't something I don't think I have heard anyone complain of before. I have had occasional feelings as if I have scaled my palate and an area of skin sloughs off - but never a blood blister.

I used to feel a small smooth lump occasionally and when I looked it would look like a lump of blood and always on the inside of my cheeks. If I bit it, it was blood but no idea what had caused it. No more than a mm or two in size. They stopped at about the same time as my skin improved and bruising generally was better.

Yes I get this a lot. Eating food with sharp edges causes mine. They disappear eventually but leave a mark. I blame the food but who knows.

I think what you may and I say May is akin to the increased likelihood of bruising when taking high dose steroids. In this case it is a reaction in the oral mucosa, possible due to food mechanical interaction (eating rough foods such as hard fruit) or your cheeks/lips brushing against your teeth, particularly during sleep and probably, the main protagonist to cause injury, tooth brushing!

If they persist and you are worried, I would call your dentist.

I had bleeding gums when on 40 mg per day. My dentist said that this is a side effect of Pred.

Yes i have had mouth ulcers in the passed.

A friend of mine had bad mouth ulcers whilst taking steroids too

Just steroids - or was she on methotrexate too?

I developed a large blood blister on the roof of my mouth after eating chicken in a crunchy coating. Haven't eaten anything sharp since. It did go away after a few days.

Thanks for all your replies..as I hadn't bitten my cheek I'm assuming it must be down to sharp food stuff scratching my mouth. As pred thins the skin on arms n legs I think it must do the same in the mouth.

Yes I have had one, I put it down to biting the inside of my cheek during the night. With my moon face due to the Prednisilone I have also noticed the inside swelling too, I also have to be careful when eating as I often bite the inside of my cheeks.
