Taking Pred on a Night

Hi,I have had PMR for 7 month and have managed to taper down to 8 mg of Pred. However I do struggle on a morning and into the early afternoon with the ache's and pains. Does any one take Preds late at night or suggest taking them at night, so when it comes the morning I don't suffer. Like wise if I do take them late at night will I suffer later in the day.

Many thanks

A lot of people do split their dose in order to get relief around the clock. It sounds, unfortunately, that you may not be taking quite high enough a dose. Did you feel good at 8 mg? Are you using a slow taper plan?

But try splitting the dose and see if that helps. What people do to start the process is take their normal dose in the morning, then that evening they will take a partial dose. It could be in your case 3 or 4 mg perhaps? Then when they get up they take the rest of the amount. It should mean a good morning. And hopefully what will happen is this keeps you feeling good through the day. Determining the exact time you take that evening dose is up to you and how you feel, or whether you decide to take it all in the evening. Just remember the usual rules, take with food, and don't take at the same time as a calcium supplement.

I haven't myself split my dose but many have and they will be along to give you their personal experience. Good luck!

Could try splitting roughly 2/3rd morning - 1/3rd evening.

The smaller evening dose will get you through the early morning and then the high dose should see you through the day.

Hiyogurt. I am further in time wise but at 7.5mg. I do have coated pred of which I take 5mg at 10pm. It takes 4 to 7hrs to kick in so beats the inflammation dump at 4amush. I then take 2.5mg uncoated with breakfast. It does help in the mornings ....I am just going by the spelling of your name that you are not in the UK. Us so then taking a third of your dose at 2am and the rest when you get up might help. Some have yoghurt or banana with it during a night time loo run.

Do your symptoms return before the next dose is due? If they don't then you could try taking pred before bed but another option is to split the dose, 2/3 in the morning and the rest later, taking the morning dose at a convenient time and the rest at some time later in the day that makes the morning better.

Trying to keep the midnight level of pred in the blood low may be helpful in allowing adrenal function to start up again. That would be achieved by taking the second dose late afternoon at the latest or using enteric coated pred at night as Poops does.

Tapering down to 7 mg pred, I split 50:50. Half after breakfast; half after tea. it worked well for morning pain and sleeping was unaffected.

I tried it all, splitting, taking it somewhere around 2am, and just in the morning...I actually found very little difference, nothing bad, nothing good so now I take mine “somewhere” around 8:30-9:00am...the 2am that I tried after seeing a recommendation, something about adrenals in the morning etc, was a real pain..as in bother...
