B5 - how much?

I searched this morning and could not find the discussion about the value of B5 and, I think, B6, as one gets to the lower dosage of pred to give the adrenals a boost. I was taking a B complex that included them, but in very low amounts. The niacin in the complex was making for some flushing now, so my primary said to go off it for 3 weeks and see if that was the cause. Seems to be. Now, I want to replace it, but the B5 I find is 500 mg and the B6 is 100 mg. That looks high and I would like to hear if those are the typical amounts any of you take on a daily basis. It's well within the toxicity guidelines, but.... Thanks!

I hope you get some figures for your needs . I don't have the figures for the B complex at hand at the moment but I will have a look tomorrow as I'm now in prep mode for Hospital appointment tomorrow .

500mg is high in fact more than 9000% as the required amount of B5 is only 6/7mg in a normal diet , although excess B5 is not linked to adverse effects . You can get Pan. Acid supplements of only 50 mg though.

Most people get enough from their diet according to studies and it apparently doesn't do a lot in large amounts to reduce inflammation .

You only need upto 2mg of B6 in a normal diet , although higher amounts can be recommended for people with inflammatory conditions because the B6 levels do get reduced by inflammation . Most people again get adequate B6 from a healthy diet but it's use is beneficial. I'm basing this on US gov. Figures so it may need correction.

Neither B 5 or 6 vitamins , however, had shown any adverse affects in studies if you take more than the % NRV or recommended daily level , although you do need to be careful with B5 if you have lipid related health problems and medications as you may already be having thus as part of your medication.

Hope that helps , it is a pain when you have to stop one particular vitamin or mineral and can't just take your usual multi supplement.

Yes, it's hard to tell what the removal of the B complex actually will do. Have done well on it. Have read about these and much the same as you are citing. B5 in particular is tolerated at very high levels and even desirable in some instances. But, I would also really like to hear if someone is actually taking these and at what strength. The implication is that, an aging person needs a lot more than one younger, so I'm wondering what a reasonable amount would be. I am at a stable 5 mg pred and about to reduce to 4.5 and would very much like to be in optimum condition to do so with regard to adrenal issues. Not the time I want to drop the B5 and B6 I was taking without replacing it somehow.

Just positive someone on this forum suggested them for helping with waking adrenals and wish I could find it. We'll see if they pop in tomorrow. Thanks

I take B5 500mg slow release and 100mg of B5. I'm at 0.5mg of pred. I haven't hit any adrenal problems on my way down as far as I know! No fatigue....mind you I'm convinced every little ache could be an adrenal problem or a flare.....but so far so good....says she touching wood.

Thank you! That confirms the dosage I was about to try. Was it recommended or did you find that on your own?

B5 recommended by a nurse friend and sorry just checked, I meant B6 for the second one! Not foggy head rather fat fingers! B6 was recommended by a doctor friend. Hope that helps.

I assumed that - not the foggy head! Yes, that is most helpful. Think I will give it a try, daily, and see how it goes. Thanks!

Interesting fact about B6. If you take a lot it gives you "very many vivid dreams". I have found this to be true. I have been taking a B50 complex for a long time with 50 mg B6 in it.

I also take one or two drops of a high dose B6 & B12 every few days. I can't take much of

it because adding a little more B6 gives me very vivid dreams--in fact I call out and wake

myself up! I also take 500 mg B5 once or twice a week. My prednisone is down to 4.0 mg

and most of the time my energy has been all right.

Hadn't thought about taking it weekly or so. That may be a good compromise if I find that the daily dosage is a bit much. Thanks for the tip about the dreams. Mine are usually boring and repetitive (going over the same territory 80 times and never getting there) so I would really notice the difference. Looking forward to 4 again one day soon.

Thank you much.
