Has anyone else continued to lose their hair after stopping prednisolone tablets I had intravenous prednisolone in hospital for ulcerative colitis and then 8 weeks on a taper from 40 mg and at the same time I was on 5 mg of prednisolone suppositories morning and night and mesalazine suppositories morning and night. Finish tablets thank goodness. I am now on one 5 MG prednisolone suppository a day and continuing with mesalazine suppositories morning and night. Only four more days of prednisolone suppository to go can't wait to stop up but will my hair continue to fall out. I have fine hair anyway and it's still falling out. HELP!!!

Have you also experienced times of hairloss with your ulcerative colitis or its treatment in the past as well as now?
Sorry , I cannot remember if you have ever mentioned also having blood tests done on your Thyroid , for Liver and full bloods as well .
I suspect the hair loss is as much due to your illness as to the pred. Our bodily status is often clearly reflected in the state of our hair and skin. It will recover and regrow - but you need to be patient,
I was going to say the same as PMRPro, l think it’s more about your condition, my sister in law had Ulcerative Colitis & her hair was very poor when her Colitis flared.
Have the Doctors recommended any supplements? As it’s more difficult for us to suggest with you having Ulcerative Colitis. Out of the various ‘Hair Serums’ & Vitamins l’ve tried Folic Acid at 5mg dose has had the best effect on my hair, you’d need to discuss this with your Doctor to ensure it wouldn’t aggravate your condition & it is only available on Prescription at 5mg. The much lower dose is available over the counter at any Pharmacy.
Hope you feel better soon.

As well as PMR I too have Ulcerative Colitis treated with Mesalazine and I first started losing my hair when I started that treatment. Now I am also on Prednisolone so am not sure how much that is adding to the problem.
Hair loss and growth work on a cycle and so although it should slow down such profuse shedding now that you are stopping prednisolone it wont happen immeadiately. Are you sure the Mesalazine is not adding to shedding problem? My hair used to be really thick but is so thin now that its a real worry. Have a look to see if you have any new growth coming. I do but the new hair is very fine which doesnt help matters.
Is your hair thinning or coming out in patches? Patches could be a sign of another autoimmune disorder known as alopatia areata. There are also other types of alopecia that causes the hair to thin out. If you have PMR you're just as likely to get another autoimmune disorder. Typically with alopecia its treated with prednisone. But as soon as you stop the prednisone the hair falls out again. Since your been losing hair all along it may be your health causing it. I know someone who lost most of her hair when she got RA.
Hair loss looks as if it may be related to your other conditions. I also have fine hair, and trying to reduce my pred dose, only PMR for me, thank goodness. My hair was already thinning when I was put on pred, then very pleased as my hair thickened. Now with reduction in dose it is shedding , and have become revolting moulting. My hairderesser noticed a change in the condition, and increased dryness of the scalp. Have now been using E45 moisturising shampoo, and it helps, also Elive, for fine hair.
