Advice on exercise

Just some advice please, from people who are well into their their pmr journey. I’m a member of a golf club at the moment, OH says I could defer my membership for a while. Did anyone get back to golf eventually? I’m cancelling my gymn membership for the foreseeable too, as I can do light weights at home when the time comes. I’m asking as the end of the month is approaching, time to act.

And er, how long is a piece of string, I’m on day 6 of starting Pred, I have improved, say 50%, and each day I think I’m slightly better. I’ve got 2 weeks before gp review. When that comes up should I be holding out to be pain free, or nearly?? Thanks for listening x

Hi 123mossie

Fellow golfer here. All last year I was unable to play so the 2 games I managed at the beginning of the season were pretty expensive!!

I can so understand your dilemma.

Let me say I have paid my fees for next year as a vote of confidence in myself that things will improve. My good golfing buddy and I are of a mind to talk with our professional and see if he could give us terms for hire of a golf buggy(sit-in). As we play only a couple of times a week and in the odd veterans competition, it hopefully won't be too expensive.

From what you say I feel we are at the same stage - although I am still on 11.5mg.

Stay positive and laugh as much as you can!!

Merry Christmas.

Trying a buggy is a good idea, my course is slightly hilly so I’d probably do that too. I’m getting a golf watch for Xmas........ should I send it back, or keep it as a token of optimism.....🙂

I would have thought you will get back to golf eventually , but that it would aggravate the joints during Active PMR.

You can also still enjoy the 19 the hole with your OH as a guest.

Does your gym have a pool ?

If it does and you think you would regularly use it , as Aquafit and Moderate swimming using breast stroke arms / crawl legs are good to exercise the muscles without adding too much pressure on the joints.

If not , taking a break from membership and maybe using the money saved to sign up and try some other classes in your area suited at a level for Chronic Pain/ Arthritis like Quigong, Tai Chi and Pilates may be worth a go. New Year , New Hobby !

Alot of people seem to lose the Pain like a miracle in days , others manage to get to 80% if they had other Health Conditions too and it can take longer than a few weeks to get there, then there are many in between .

Pain is as long as a piece of string , but getting your Pain down by 50% in a week and having continued improvement does happen. It just might mean that you need to wait a bit longer before your consider Tapering your dose.

Good luck and keep us posted x

Thanks Blearyeyed, the tai chi sounds good, I’ve always fancied that. Yes I got miracle relief when I was put on 40mgm per day for a chest infection pre diagnosis, but I didn’t realise what the pain was at that point. Fingers crossed it continues to settle x

You have to listen to your own body.

I was an active gym junkie, walker and squash player before PMR, and returned cautiously as soon as I had relief from symptoms. A year and a couple of months in, I'm back to full activity levels. I've had a few soft tissue injuries which I still can't be sure are pred related or just a 79 year old doing too much. Best thing I found was to try, without pushing too hard and then to gradually build up the pace or the weights. It was probably around 70% for a while, but fairly soon came back to 95%. Now on 4mg and about to try for 3.5 as a Christmas present to myself!

Hi, I had PMR for 6 1/4 years. One of the hardest things was having to miss golf. I missed the activity and also it was my main social life. I didn’t quit my club but I couldn’t golf much the first couple years. Then I tried going out with my friends and dropping a ball on the 150 yard marker. Then I eventually was able to tee off, but I didn’t use any woods as they hurt my shoulders.

So there may be options for you to modify your game, if you want to golf. Since you are just starting your PMR journey you probably don’t yet know what your muscles will allow you to do.

Yes, I'll have to be patient but that's a good tip.. I can practice a bit at home, it'll give me an idea of how I'd cope. Long way off yet though! Thanks x
