Have you tried Tramadol for the hip?

Nothing except pred will make any difference to morning stiffness due to PMR, The antiinflammatory effect of pred lasts from 12 to 36 hours depending on the person which means that it may wear off before the next dose is due.

If the problem is that you have to wait too long, then taking pred a couple of hours before you need to get up and settling down for a bit longer may work well enough. The optimal time to take pred to reduce morning stiffness is 2am - if you can wake, take and sleep again that may work. Otherwise you may have to split the dose, taking maybe 2/3 in the morning and the rest at a time that means the effect lasts over until the next morning. Some experimentation is needed to find what works best for you.

I found splitting my dose really works as it takes 2 to 3 hours to kick in otherwise.
