Reducing Symptoms

It is 12:45am here in Canada. Went to bed at 3pm not knowing what was going on. I am reducing from6mg to 5&1/2 on the slow method with no issues. I became so dizzy and nauseated had to go to.bed. Am now having tea and toast. Could the reducing cause the dizziness and nausea? Have not been this bad before. Have no pain but my blood pressure was up. The room just wanted to go round. My husband wanted to take me to emerge but preferred not to go if possible. Wondered if you could enlighten me in any way?

Hi Robinsnest

It sounds a bit like Vertigo or some kind of middle ear issue. Are you on BP Meds?

Sometimes, we can blame the reducing Pred for everything but l think l’d book to see your Doctor in the morning.

Going to bed was the best idea, when you are relaxed, check your BP again but don’t look at the gauge while your doing it.

If it remains very high, call the Out of Hours Service for advice.

Let us know later how you are feeling & what the Doctors say.

Kind Regards

MrsN

I suspect that this maybe to do with your Adrenal function. I recognise the “ whirligigs”. Nausea and dizziness, especially when I reduce at these doses. As Mrs Nails says, you could be unwell and this puts a further strain on your system.

If your BP was raised I'd suspect something other than adrenal problems - that would lead to low BP to cause the dizziness. How high was it?

160 over 98 but is down this morning to 131/88

You do need to speak to your doctor soon - spiking BP with dizziness is a warning there is something not right. That wasn't high enough to be termed a hypertensive crisis but it was high.

Thank you for everyone’s input. Will see how today goes. I am going to watch my blood pressure throughout the day. It was so weird how it came on.Was having a coffee with friends and all of a sudden felt really light headed. I came home and could not function. Went straight to bed. No headache, just upset stomach from light headedness. No point in calling doctor as she will not see me for a month. If continues will go to emergency.

It could be a virus, but watch that BP - do you know for sure you took your Pred yesterday?

Yes I did but I was beginning to wonder if I took a 1mg tab instead of a 5mg but if I did that I would have pain and I have been feeling really pain free from PMR. I have no pain today. My GP is always questioning my BP but the Rhemy always says it is fine. I usually go to exercise today but am just going to take it easy. I am going to keep an eye on blood pressure today. I always run a bit high as I have a hyper personality ha ha.

Yes, l always wonder about the 1mg/5mg possible mix up.

I always do mine for the week ahead on a Sunday, when l’m on my own & not distracted; l have a daily box just for my Pred.

The GP must see you the same day if you go in and say you want an emergency appointment. Does she refuse to see possible heart attack or stroke patients?

That is not how it works in this country. Once you are over 70 they could not care less. I only go once a year and when I was there last I took a list of questions. She replied she would only answer a few. What does one do?

I am in Canada and my doctor will see me same day if I explain what is going on. I don’t know where in Canada you are, but I would look for a new doctor.

Robinsnest72 profile image
Robinsnest72 in reply toMikb

That is next to impossible as another doctor will not accept you as a patient if you already have one

Where abouts are you?

It is the same in the Victoria area....no switching of doctors if you are lucky to have one. A 30 day wait is standard for a non urgent appointment, however there are “emergency” appointments available each day. There are SO many causes of dizziness, good luck sorting that out.

I am in Ontario

I am in Toronto which is maybe why there are plenty of choices for doctors.

Have you ever heard of Sauble Beach? I live on the Beach Highway and is at the beginning of the Bruce which includes Wiarton and Tobermory. Small communities and huge shortage of doctors. Some waiting lists have over 2000 names on them

I have been to Sauble Beach. It’s beautiful there. And now I understand why you can’t get another doctor! Small communities are great but it can be difficult to get health care.

Taking it easy today and seeing how things pan out sounds like a good plan. I can fully relate to your situation. Until recently I was living in a small town in the Northwest Territories and had to deal with shortages of locum doctors and no permanent docs. There was always a doctor available in the Emergency Department of the Health Centre though. Do you have that option if you end up needing to see someone urgently?

Absolutely We have a lovely hospital in Wiarton .I would use it ahead of calling the doctor
