I am 50 I have two grown up children and one beautiful grandson whom is my little pain killer, and I am self employed caring for children in my own home, i have a disabled husband therefore my work is the only income, apart from DLA that pays the bills.
I and have had PMR for around 5 years, I was only diagnosed last October. I was on Steroids but I have had muscle ruptures from them so come off them, I am in so much pain everywhere it’s easier to say what I can do not what I can’t,
I have a positive attitude go swimming/walking in the pool most days,
I don’t take pain killers as they hurt my stomach and keep me awake at night,

You won't know until you try. They have next to no effect on me - even at 15mg.
You can try them - my first experience was 6 weeks with 2 weeks each at 15, 10 and 5mg and stop (which is a normal taper for some things, doesn't work for long for PMR). Within 6 hours I had a miracle, 6 hours after missing the first 5mg dose I was in bed in tears and in worse pain than before.
I don't know how you cope without pred - I had 5 years of it and I really couldn't face the thought of going back to that. Painkillers never even took the edge of my pain - so never missed them!
Like others I just don’t know how you cope. Has any doctor explained the link between taking steroids and your ruptured muscles?
Prednisalone was a blessing to me but I still had to do my part with PMR like pacing my activities and resting. This is a rock and a hard place that you are in. A good doctor should be able to advise you on the use of Prednisalone in your circumstances.
My gosh, I could not have got to the pool, let alone got into it when I was first diagnosed with PMR. I would have bought a one way ticket to Switzerland by now.
