Well, well, well. Had my busy day a couple of days as you know since I was full of how productive the day was. Yesterday had the beginnings of a cold, foggy head a d deathly fatigue. Have been getting palpitations and putting it all down to pred. Couldn't sleep last night due to severity of palpitations, though didn't feel too unwell. This morning thought I was full of flu, but foggy head and feeling sick, along with palpitations prompted me to ask OH to take my blood pressure. Whoops heart rate 188 at rest. Ten mins later 189. OH, trained first responder phoned GP, then took me straight to A&E. Triage nurse admitted me straight to resus. All a bit scary to be honest especially second attempt to slow it down when they said the drug they were trying would make me feel dead for a couple of seconds before heart kicked in.

Betablokers seem to be sorting me out. Thank goodness. Unfortunately as I haven't had heart probs before they are going to keep me un for monitoring. Better safe than sorry. Guess the morale of the story is make themost of those good days eh????

Get lot of sleep. Make the most of the enforced rest, and get well soon!

😮 That’s a bit hair raising! The ‘stuttering’ typo with the “d deathly fatigue” was remarkably apt. Hope it’s up from here.

You poor thing Marilyn1959. I'm glad to your OH was at hand and knew what to do.

Really hope this episode is a one off. Make the most of the downtime....rest...and enjoy being pampered!

Atrial fibrillation? SVT? Welcome to the club ;)

I thought of you straight away when they said atrial fibrillation. Defo in the same club now. What is SVT?

Supraventricular tachycardia. Just a different arrythmia ;)

They don't do cardioversion here until there is no other choice. They say it doesn't last - can't say I'm sorry as the drug version sounds horrible and the cathlab version is a bit of an effort. What they DO use is little bottles of highish dose magnesium - one of the standard things is to give a drip of magnesium - to take as the episode starts - and it does seem to work pretty well!

Mine is fairly well managed on medication - but a bit more than just betablockers, I am on an anti-arrythmic too and, most important, an anticoagulant. But I do still have episodes that can last up to an hour or so, always at the same sort of time of night, just before midnight, and I can't identify a trigger. But the magnesium does seem to shorten them a lot.

Looks like we are both stuck lying down trying to get our hearts to behave.

You are in the right place , try to relax and rest and don't make any quick movements in and out of the bed for the loo etc or sitting up either.

Take a good drink of water before doing anything and wait in each position you are in and have another drink before you get up to stand or go from standing to walking. This will reduce the dash in heart rate and help bring it down each day as part of Self Care even if the main reason for your heart issues isn't to do with movement .

Take care and keep us updated when you can xxx

That all sounds very frightening Marilyn. I hope they sort it out soon. In the meantime try to rest, in the least restful place ever. 🌸

Was it you Jane who had different blood pressure readings in each arm? If so can you remind me what caused this?

SheffieldJane profile image
SheffieldJane in reply toMarilyn1959

Yes it was. I had a heart scan that didn’t identify any particular problem. They suspected that my Aorta function, could be affected by Vasculitis, the readings were consistently 10 points apart. Like so many things in this illness it all came to naught.

Are you still in hospital?

Yes. Still here though expecting to be discharged now everything has settled.

Atrial fibrillation ? Me too ! Scary when it first happens but medication keeps it under control.

Good luck!

You're in the best place Marilyn, even if it's bustling and noisy...

Wishing you well and beta blockers do their job...

Sorry that you've joined the club. I've had SVT for several years now and it is pretty well controlled by beta blockers and abstinence from caffeine.

If I have an episode I drink ice cold water slowly and breathe deeply. Also eating a daily banana seems to help. But it can't be denied that it can be scary.

Very possibly the magnesium in the banana!

This reminds me so much of my daughter who was having SVTs. She eventually had an ablation, which isn’t always necessary. She is so much better now. Hope things improve for you soon and you will be well enough to leave hospital. Take care .
