It could be myofascial pain syndrome causing shoulder and neck muscles to be tight and painful. That is more common alongside PMR - in PMR the inflammatory substances are system, in MPS they are located in trigger points which can be felt as knots in the muscle group. So not directly PMR - but a similar cause.

I have neck problems recently but they come and go, worse early mornings in bed
I have identical diagnosis time frame with corresponding tight neck muscles. The pain from tight muscles.ligaments gets worse when I "overdue it". Currently on 7mg of pred. Rhumy suggested physical therapy which I have been undergoing for about 3 weeks and have observed some benefit
I had a sore neck when first diagnosed with PMR. It was so bad I could barely turn my head enough to drive. Pred sorted it out.
The neck pain returned as I was tapering down and my rheumatologist sent me to physical therapy which was able to sort it out after a couple months.
