does any one know of a medicine or anyway to stop the itching? I almost have my skin scratched off. It is awful. Benadryl does not help. Is this part of PMR??

I had terribly itchy legs when I was on higher doses of pred, not nearly so bad now I'm on 7 mg per day. I can't advise on medicine but I did find Aveeno products very good at reducing the itching. I usually used their daily wash for babies in the bath or shower plus their adult moisturiser.

I had a rash all over my body and neck a few weeks back that got so bad my gp referred me to dermatology that day!! Antihistamines were prescribed and also a steroid cream. The cream reduced the severity of the rash overnight. As it's the weekend try seeing a chemist about some cream and I would see your gp monday if possible. It took 4 courses of antihistamines and the cream to get my rash to go. Try and jump on it asap.YBB

Calamine lotion. 👍

DescriptionCalamine, also known as calamine lotion, is a medication used to treat mild itchiness. This includes from sunburn, insect bites, poison ivy, poison oak, or other mild skin conditions. It may also help dry out skin irritation. It is applied on the skin as a cream or lotion. Side effects may include skin irritation.

I found this helped ...👆

I suggest you try a little on your skin to check you're not allergic .

Many of pmr sufferers have dry itchy skin. Best to keep it well moisturized with a non perfumed cream.

Since my rash I have moisturised more but fingers crossed nothing since

A good non-medicated product which might help is food grade hemp oil.

One of the rarer side effects is 'Hives'. So I suggest a visit to GP.

On the other hand, are you taking enteric coated...............sometimes the dye can cause itching or a rash...........you can wash the dye off with no effect on the contents..

But your fingers will be stained red....it does wash off eventually. 🙄 But moisturise twice a days once it's resolved.

I used a flannel kept especially for use in taking off the dye. So no dirty fingers 😉

I have used 100%. Pure EMU oil for many years. It's transdermal and really is a fantastic moisturizer..

Now I find it keeps my limbs smooth and not flaky. 👍

I agree. I just sent for Emuaid from the puter- almost $50. and Emu is better!

Where does one buy EMU? I’ve been having itches for a while. But I have found that sticky ointments have made things worse because my skin on some parts of my body has become very sensitive to things rubbing against it. I live in the USA. I just saw adverts for Emuaid yesterday, but also saw some negative reviews about customer service. How is EMU different from EMU?

Definitely keep the skin moisturised with non perfumed moisturiser, but I have found witch hazel [liquid] can be really helpful for itching

I developed an allergy to something in the structure of the starch in commercialised wheat products - no wheat, no itch. And dry skin itches something awful!!!

Ensure your skin is well moisturised and if that doesn't help try Crotamiton Cream. Available OTC in the UK and sold as Eurax cream.

Beware of using anti histamine creams excessively as they can cause rebound itching when stopping.

Really hot water for bathing or showering will also exacerbate itching as it dries out the skin's natural oils.

I had a really itchy scalp a few weeks ago, for no apparent reason. T-Gel shampoo and good old fashioned Vosene sorted it out.

Dear stonecreek,

I suffer from itching at odd times and use a preparation called Eurax cream which I find very effective, works for up to ten hours. Says on box for relief of itching caused by Itchy dermatitis, Dry Eczema, Allergic rashes, Hives, nettle rashes, Chickenpox, Insect bites and stings, heat rashes, Sunburn and personal itching. 30 g tubes.

Best wishes

Colin

I use Doublebase emollient gel daily on body, sparingly. It is a non greasy and unperfumed moisturiser. My elderly Mum was prescribed it for dry skin years ago and I tried it and have used it ever since. It is available to buy at the chemist in a small tube or larger dispenser
