What do you think??

I have been in the habit of getting gastro resistant pred for 4 and half years. Because I have had stomach ulcers, gastritis and oesophagitis leading to Barrets Oesophagus. All of a sudden I am being told that I don’t need the gastro resist ones as I take Omeprazole for my tummy problems. Apparently I don’t need both. I understood that the gastro resistant tabs were absorbed in the duodenum rather than the stomach. Any thoughts?

Liz.

Morning Liz

Who has decided that this is the best way forward for you?

Because you’ve had multiple issues all connected to your digestive tract l’d query it again.

Yes, lots of us take Plain Pred with a PPI most people probably could get away with just Coated Pred.

A lot of us take yogurt every day along side/after our Pred to try & help our digestive tract.

Personally, l would query it again, pointing out your previous history.

Kind Regards

Thank you Mrs N. I saw the gastroenterologist a couple of weeks ago and queried it with him. He said I should be having gastro resistant pred. I then queried it with the surgery GP who said they wouldn’t be prescribing them as having the Omeprazole was sufficient. I don’t know whether to pursue it. What I had hoped. Was that the gastroenterologist would mention it in his follow up letter but he hasn’t. I do take a hefty dollop of yogurt at breakfast. Lovely with honey.

I’d be inclined to ring the Consultants Secretary to explain, as a note/call/fax from him is all that is needed to confirm you NEED the Gastric Resistant Pred.

We have to take charge of our own Health, l’m afraid.

Let us know how you get on.

Kind Regards

That sounds a good plan Nrs N. Will let you know. I think I have to be more forceful but it’s not in my nature.

No, but your Health is in your hands, you can do it! 🌷

I agree with mrsN ....you can do it. Tell them it will cost them more if it disturbs your gastric system for the sake of a few pence.

If there's no change and the Dr is resistant and consultant doesn't come through, remember you can buy ppi these days. You can't buy coated (or uncoated) pred. Then at next gastro appt ask again. But this is last resort territory to look after yourself. 🌻

Thank you poopadoop. I know you are right. I will get in touch with my consultant. I must learn to be proactive instead of compliant.

It's hard...I write down what I want to ask so when my mind goes blank...which it does in the presence of drs....I can refer to my notes. Otherwise I am a blithering idiot. The times I have done this I walked out feeling better about the appointment in general.

That’s a good tip. Thank you.

No problem ...i can't lay claim... others on the forum suggested it to me when I first joined. Just paying it forward. 😃

Hello Liz, I was reading your post & getting more annoyed on your behalf! With your history, I am surprised that they are quibbling. I know that if that was happening to me, my best ally would be my Consultant & if you cannot contact him directly, then talk to his secretary, as Mrs Nails suggested. Your Consultant has more clout than your GP.

Personally, I don't like PPIs - I read up on them, they leach calcium from the bones, with the potential to cause fractures. I use Ranitidine in preference.

I am prescribed both on repeat. I am prescribed Ranitidine 150mg but if they are still making a fuss, you can buy Ranitidine 75mg otc

Good luck & remember if you don't stick to your guns, no one else will!

When I said 'both' I meant Pred & Ranitidine!

Thank you. It is annoying. I had a really bad time with stomach ulcers, losing weight and constant nausea. I think I will contact the consultant and ask him to write to the surgery. Why oh why have our surgeries become businesses???

Absolutely. That is just what I think. It’s all about saving a few coppers.
