Cautionary tale...

After nearly 10 months of doing perfectly all right on no sugar and no white carbs, for no good reason I succumbed this morning in M&S Foodhall to the temptation of a Belgian bun. What a wretched waste of £1 for very nasty after effects - feeling sick, bloated and miserable - not a treat at all. Such a silly mistake, especially as since last October I've easily turned down some lovely-looking desserts and cakes without a qualm, something I never thought I'd be able to do.

Hope you feel better soon. They are never as good as they look, only my parkin never disappoints, and after months of low sugar I am not surprised you feel unwell.😵🌻

Yes, you're right. They are very rarely as good as they look. However, like you, I must put in a word for my own baking. I could never do fancy icings, but for excellent carrot cake and gingerbread I couldn't be beaten. I took all my baking equipment to a charity shop last October as a symbol of my life as a baker being over. When I had to either give up coffee or suffer terrible heartburn for the rest of my life, I always reminded myself that coffee never tastes as good as it smells (like bacon and toast)

I am sad you had to give up your baking. I just stopped buying flour.😁

That's okay. it was easier than I expected. I just do other sorts of cooking instead or endless knitting...

in reply to Marijo1951

Glad you replaced it. I miss my cooking when I have a few bad days and haven't the energy. I should do even more batch cooking.

Just thinking of how long your scarf would be now after years of endless knitting!😋😂😂😂

It isn't one scarf - if it was it would be Tom Baker's as Dr Who x 1,000. The biggest thing I made when I had insomnia every night was an adult-sized blanket, which I hope gave some homeless person a bit of comfort.

Mine went when we moved from a big house to a small flat. If necessary I could still bake - have a few things on the top shelf!

😂😂😂😂

That comment makes it sound like baking products are as sinful as the publications at your newsagents !!

When I next go to buy baking powder I must remember to tell the shop keeper to hide it for me in a brown paper bag before I leave the shop!!😂😂😂😂😋😘

Does a bit doesn't it - but as a PMR-er, albeit well managed, everything only used once in a blue moon is higher up!!! Saw a fabulous cupboard in a kitchen ad - the inside pulls down a couple of feet!!!! My kitchen in Durham was PMR-proof, all drawers in the lower part - no scrabbling on knees to get something from the back of the bottom level ...

You're so right about coffee, and toast (unless you've got absolutely the right 'spread', butter, or dripping, and the right temperature at the moment of eating) - not so sure about bacon.

I cant stop baking as its something me and my 7 year old grandson do together and it doesnt I involve too much effort on my part. Today he has made shortbread, choc chip cookies and scones. My kitchen does look like a bomb went off though!! I am trying to stay away from all the goodies but I dont have much willpower!!

Yes, and we all know deep down that it isn't worth it... I remember over 40 years ago, about 3 years after I'd stopped smoking with little trouble, I had a cigarette that I didn't really want and that gave me a terrible headache. I just thought afterwards 'Why the hell did I do that?'

It won't just be the bun itself , even the most wonderful dessert or gluten filled treat will do exactly the same to your insides if you have totally cut out sugar and gluten for a long time.

Your body has to get used to eating them again and doesn't have the right balance of enzymes in the gut to deal with them anymore .

Some people mistake it for becoming permenantly intolerant but it is usually a temporary thing.

If you chose to return to sugar and carbs a little every so often after that initial reaction for a few meals it settles down for most people and you wouldn't get the symptoms anymore on eating the odd treat.

Just in case you fancy getting back to a treat or two in future , you can be relieved , you won't have lost the chance to eat them forever😘

Practice makes it perfect :).. that is why I never gave up sweets or drinks...I have to have desert after dinner, no exception or diner is not complete.

The odd thing is that I haven't missed the sweet treats, or at least I hadn't until that wretched Belgian bun caught my eye.

I don't really have a sweet tooth but there's half a lemon cheesecake in my freezer, bought then I had visitors a little while ago. Now it seems to be flashing an 'Eat me'

light every time I open that freezer drawer. I shall have to give to the next visitors who arrive and put temptation beyond reach!

In such a situation I cut it into very small pieces and freeze them separately - a tiny bit of what you fancy is fine and does you good.

I succumb to ice cream on occasion when I am otherwise doing well with eating habits. But I think too much deprivation of pleasure is equally harmful to our mental well-being. It's just too bad that your bun wasn't delicious. I shouldn't think 1 bun should undermine your progress too much. Our bodies have already turned against us; life is short; we have to take our little pleasures now and then. Next time, chose something really wonderful. I'd rather die by "death by chocolate."

I am not sure completely eliminating sugar is a good idea; that is not to say, go wild, but an occasional pleasure does a lot for the soul. We shouldn't try to be too austere. I understand completely. Don't punish yourself for it.

I haven't given up gluten altogether as I do eat good wholemeal or rye bread and sugar-free oatcakes. I also eat fruit (probably more than I'm supposed to on a low carb diet) so haven't entirely given up sugar. I think much of the disappointment is that I've lost the taste for the bland - really don't want boring white bread or rice - and a Belgian bun is definitely sweet and bland. Next time I'm tempted, I'll go for something spicy, say ginger cake or slightly bitter like a very expensive dark chocolate cake from a certain bakery that I know.

That sounds more like it - my treat is an ice from my favourite place in town. It is now right next to the hospital and across the road from my dentist - so get plenty of opportunities to drop by ...

Don't find a problem with coffee. I have decaf, or perhaps I just ignore the problems cos I want to. My new bottle of gin awaits me when I no longer on pred 😜😜😜😜

Marijo1951 profile image
Marijo1951 in reply to Suffererc

Apparently it isn't the caffeine that causes heartburn, but something else, so going decaf doesn't help. Anyway I always thought that the caffeine kick was a big part of the coffee experience.

Yes, it is disgusting, isn't it. I am not usually a sweets craver, however, once in a while I do succumb and am always sorry. I wonder if I just get into a kind of contrary mood. :)

The curse of M&S foodhall. Don't even mention Percy Pigs.

I love Percy Pigs 🐷........and keep out of M&S Food hall now as have to eat them all (in a coupe of sittings - I hide the half eaten bags) and buy two bags as they’re always on offer!

Marijo1951 profile image
Marijo1951 in reply to Telian

Well, I'm glad to say that Percy Pigs do nothing for me. But those giant chocolate buttons that M&S do are a different story - they melt so satisfyingly in the mouth...

Telian profile image
Telian in reply to Marijo1951

I must be an oddity re chocolate as don’t eat it - after 10 years of migraines - even the fancying I don’t succumb to anymore! Just the thought gives me headache.

We all have our funniosities- if that’s a word!

Marijo1951 profile image

It should be a word if it isn't already. I suppose 'idiosyncrasies' is the standard word. I don't eat chocolate these days, but boy do I miss it. I'm so glad that really good chocolate is expensive these days, so I can tell myself I can't afford it.
