A couple of suggestions regarding surviving the heat...

Tepid showers, not cold showers, will bring down your body temperature, but not to the point where it kicks on your internal furnace. If you get too cool, your body will start the process of warming you - exactly the opposite of what you intended.

Placing your feet in a basin of tepid water also helps bring down body temperature without causing foot/leg cramps.

Freezer gel packs really cool you off, especially if you place them at the top of your thigh near your groin.

Keep sipping water to avoid dehydration.

Electric fans work outdoors, too. Keep it and the attached cord off the ground and away from moisture, and use an extension cord rated for outdoor use. A spray bottle pointed away from the fan but between you and the fan produces a refreshing mist.

Loose light colored cotton clothing might not be the most fashionable, but will be comfortable. I've also found a few items make of bamboo and of high-tech fabrics intended for runners to be cool.

If you feel light headed, dizzy, nauseated, short of breath, are hot but not perspiring, get some help. You could be headed for heat stroke.

Yes, I do think these extreme weather events will occur more often. Take good care of yourselves.

I brought some bamboo towels back from the Caribbean for Baby Grandaughter before she was born, they are soooo soft!

Bamboo socks are lovely too though I don't expect many people are wearing socks in this heat!

And I have to add: don't drink large amounts of iced fluids - "room" temperature is better for your stomach AND for keeping you cool. If it is too cold reaching your stomach it diverts blood flow from your extremities (similar to eating heavy meals) and that makes it less easy for your body to cool down, you may even warm up. And at these temperatures that isn't quite what we want ;)

Wet, thin cotton towel around the neck area helps to cool down too.

I live in sub-tropical area and here they recommend drinks with added salt , or isotonic drinks to replenish minerals lost via sweat.

You could try "wafting" the heat over to West Yorkshire. It's a bit chilly here and has been since the brief heatwave on Saturday.

Was happy with that in s. York's. Glad to have my coat on yesterday.

Everyone (except us) has coats on here today - struggling into the low 20s and no sun. Bliss after a week of mid-30s

It is funny. I bet they think it's the middle of winter. 15 with breeze and clouds here. Bliss.

What always tickles me is seeing small girls in tights in September. No longer high summer I know but often mid-20s. I was once told off for one of the girls at 2 or 3 not having a hat on. It was a perfectly ordinary day - some cloud and just nice temps. I got a filthy look for asking if that was because of the sun or the wind?
