I was just wanting to know about the coated tablets because I take this medication at night and if something were to happen to it I wouldn't be able to breathe the next day and I'm always worried about something making me throw up and how was just wondering how fast does it get into your system
Coated tablets: I was just wanting to know about... - PMRGCAuk
Coated tablets
That's 4 to 6 hours then. It does not disperse until after its passed through your tummy and digestive system. 50% of you stomach contents pass through the stomach in 2.5 to 5 hours so there is some overlap of time. If you throw up within 6 hours of taking coated pred, then generally the advice is to take more later but that depends on your dose. What are you at the moment?
I am on a medication called olanzapine and I haven't thrown up but I'm always worried that after I take the pill that something could cost me to throw up that's why I was wondering just how long it takes to get into your bloodstream so I wouldn't take another pill if I didn't need to
I will cross my fingers that this continues then. I think the patient info leaflets could have more info about time of release. But the "what to do if you miss a dose" might help. If you are in the UK then you could dial 111 the non emergency number for advice. 🤞
If this causes you stress then get uncoated pred in too in just in case. To be honest I am not sure what you do on high GCA doses of pred - 40mg up. But if I was on 15mg and under, as soon as I stopped vomiting and felt better I would take full dose of uncoated pred with yoghurt so it disperses in an hour. Hopefully some of the original dose may stick anyway and an extra few mg wouldn't harm as a once off. Peace of mind is priceless.
I think if you were on GCA dosing and had a tummy bug with vomiting, you’d need to seek medical advice for administration via another route, either intramuscular or intravenous. Too much to lose with GCA (eyesight) to risk missing a dose.
With PMR, probably ok if vomiting settles, but if severe (days) this may also require alternatives.
Do you have PMR or GCA Kaybord ?
You mention breathing, so maybe not. You may get more info as pertains to respiratory problems on a different forum. We’re all on steroids for years. Hopefully yours is a short course?
Yay! ‘The steroids for years club” I like that.
Reinforces the feeling that we are all in this together .I get so much help and understanding from here and am eternally grateful.
This is what I wrote on the other thread:
Enteric coated tablets are designed to pass through the acid environment of the stomach with the contents and are then broken down in a different pH in the lower gut. It depends on how much food was in the stomach when you took the pred and how fast your gut works, some are slower than others. It is usually at least 3-4 hours before the outer coating disintegrates and the pred is released and sometimes more. It is said it can be between 4 and as much as 7 or even 8 hours before the blood level rises. When it does rise it rises slowly and reaches a lower peak value.
I think you should discuss your fears with your mental health team - they may be able to advise on the type of steroid which is best for you to reduce this anxiety. Plain prednisolone is absorbed and effective in under an hour.
Hi Kayboard
Do you have PMR or GCA as you mention your breathing?
And, is it more the fear of being sick or does the Olanzaoine make you feel nauseous?
I would suggest a chat with your doctor regarding this issue.
Best of Luck 🍀
