Daisy-Roots: my pill cutter

I just tested it, and successfully cut a 1mg tablet into 4. No crumbling.

I bought this from my local chemist. The left side is the top, see the razor blade? The right side is the base. Place the tablet in the ‘V’ and bring the hinged top over and press. There’s a compartment to store loose pills and the top and bottom lock together after use so you don’t spill any.

I've been using one of these (same make) for OH - 5mg to 2.5mg for his last feew 12.5 doses- results variable, crumbling with some or occasional uneven portions.

Idoubt any cutter is 100% successful.

Same style as mine and OH's. I can use mine - not his!!! Go figure!!

Yes Soraya, I've been using exactly the same Safe and Sound pill cutter as you for the past three years or so. It's excellent, and I use the wee compartments at the back if I need to keep a half pill till the next week.

A really essential buy for us!

Pill cutters are indispensable. Had mine for years and just about worked everytime.

I have something very similar I inherited from Dad. I have a little pot of various sized "halves", in fact I doubt I have a true half. I talk about large and small halves and my son worries that my maths education was lacking!

They are cheaply made things and I think it's the lack of the draw as to whether or not it's accurate.

Made me chuckle re small/large halves. Of course we know EXACTLY what you mean. Keep up son 😉

Yours is bigger than mine! Pill cutter envy! I need mine to work soon as I head towards 6.5! Currently on 7 - last time my taper down was too soon but thanks to the forum I am now being careful and taking on board every scrap of detail that I can! X

As long as you weren't using it for his special pills ;)

No! Not allowed to crush, chew or cut her vetoryl. Wouldn’t do me much good either, suppresses her adrenal production of cortisol! Eek!

I used it for her tramadol and cleaned it well 😊

As long as she doesn't lick the pills out ... ;)

This is great idea for those of us who were told by gp and rheumy that I can taper at my own pace so I have had even cut pills into quarters which is messy to sat the least. Will have to go and buy one. Thanks.

Am thinking of investing in one of these myself. Interestingly enough, one of my dogs needed tablets this week and they were supplied already cut in half - by the vet! Maybe the bill of over £400 had something to do with it ..........................

Ha! Services for dog, £399 for skilfully cutting pills in half. £1 for consultation 🤣

Vet bills! --- If I had to pay for my GCA treatment at vet rates, I would have had to sell my house - and probably my wife too.

Those 1mg Prednisone pills are so tiny! I think the drug companies who make them must be basing their specifications on old ideas that 1mg reductions over two years are the required amount. Isn't it about time they made 0.5mg tablets available for more gradual tapers?

Down to 2mg it is possible to move in 1/2mg steps when you can obtain 2.5mg and 1mg tablets - which you can for prednisolone in the UK. 5mg tablets are usually a decent size for cutting to get 2.5mg anyway. Prednisone is also available in 2.5mg tablets in the US.
