I have been and gone and done it !!!

I have joined Slimming World on line 😱😱

I am busy eating all the goodies so I can start next week or maybe the week after πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Well now I must be serious. I am 2 stone overweight thanks to pred. My walking is being affected. I waddle along.

Also tapering to 8mg next week so hopefully things are looking up.

Don't think clearing out the cupboard is a recommended approach ;)

No I know . But chocolate Brazil’s had to be eaten. O dear

Wash off the chocolate and you have a lovely and guilt-free dose of selenium in each nut.

Too late . I have eaten them 😳

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassadorβ€’ in reply toMarijo1951

The only reason for having them would be the chocolate - it is the Brazils nuts I don't like. So I'll lick off the choccy - and give you the nuts???????????? ;)

Marijo1951 profile image
Marijo1951β€’ in reply toPMRpro

I like brazil nuts but went off them the last time I bought some as they had a definite after taste of bleach - probably been washed in a chlorine solution at some stage and not rinsed properly.

SuziCutie profile image
SuziCutieβ€’ in reply toPMRpro

Haha. Chocolate the best bit πŸ˜‚

Marijo1951 profile image
Marijo1951β€’ in reply toSuziCutie

Not to show off or anything, but I haven't eaten chocolate or any sugar since October (apart from one bite of mince pie on Christmas Day). Mind you, that didn't stop me putting a pound back on this week - I didn't enjoy Slimming World this morning and left early. I really can't understand why I should have gained weight as I'm definitely sticking to the plan but, as usual, I'll blame the steroids...

O dear. You have done well . Stay strong don’t give up. Bound to be ups and downs. I am bracing myself 😳

It is perfectly normal for weight to fluctuate by as much as a kilo and even from day to day! Unfortunately (IMHO at least) diet clubs rarely tell their members about that and there is this sense of superiority on the part of those who didn't gain. Do you always wear the same outfit for weighing day? You would be amazed how much difference there can be between 2 different t-shirts...

Marijo1951 profile image
Marijo1951β€’ in reply toPMRpro

I weigh my clothes including my underclothes. I tend to wear one of two dresses that are lighter than others, although you'd never guess just by looking at them. In fact SW do mention that weight can fluctuate, but they rather negate this by their attitude during the weigh in. However, since I can now wear a dress and a skirt that until very recently were too tight and uncomfortable, I know I'm heading in the right direction.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassadorβ€’ in reply toMarijo1951

Yes, it is the attitude to the weigh-ins that gets me with all of them to be honest.

Well done for joining. There’s a meeting held every week just around the corner from me-I’ve put off going as felt a bit unsure of paying to have someone tell me to eat less and move more. However the daughter joined a group near her home before Christmas and has had great success. I’m managing more exercise but eating less is challenging 🐷. Let us know how you get on.

SuziCutie profile image
SuziCutieβ€’ in reply toMaisie1958

That’s why I chose online. Cost a bit but that’s my motivation hopefully. I have paid for it so must stick to it.

Tried other diets without success. My will power has left since PMR struck. But hopefully this will work

Slimming world has worked for a lot of people that I know. You could probably even have eaten your chocolate brazils as syns! I'm doing it unofficially as my son in law joined and thus has the books. Unfortunately the group close to us closed and there isn't another convenient one so he doesn't go now. I started dieting seriously by calorie counting about the same time as I started pred and I lost about a stone that way. I don't usually try to loose weight between Christmas and Easter because I have SAD and the calorie cravings are too strong. I haven't really lost any extra weight since starting to follow slimming world but I have lost what i put on at Christmas which is good. I haven't got a lot further to go to be in the 'healthy' range now

I didn’t know you could do it on line. That would save the humiliation of the weekly weigh in with the rest of the class looking on. I used to take my earrings off, every little helps.

I have put on 2 stone and am a fellow waddler

I am tapering to 7mgms hoping that will help but there is no sign of it yet.

Let us know how you get on and I might join you

πŸ₯‚πŸ₯‚

Pipalina profile image
Pipalinaβ€’ in reply toEdithWales

I’m with you, Edith, watch, bangle, rings and pop-socks off too. Short of embarrassing myself by standing there in brassiere and big pants there wasn’t much more that I could decently remove at the weekly weigh in!

I found that going to the group sessions made me much more disciplined about following the plan than doing it online - probably because of the anticipation of the weekly weigh in. But, I just wasn’t able to attend on a regular basis mainly because of the vagaries of my ME.

Everyone in the group was really very supportive and encouraging but after the weekly weigh in and general chat there used to be a round the room open discussion as to your weight loss/gain that week.

People were very magnanimous and clapped whether you had lost or gained. But, in my case, I would smile and clap those that had lost 3 or 4lbs or more in a week but really I would like to have slapped them!

If you had gained the consultant would gently ask if you knew why that might be and would you like to share it with the group...”I’ve licked a crisp and I had a quality street..”

The group leader confided in me that this translated to - I’ve eaten a 32 pack of Assorted Walkers Crisps and a tin of Quality Street...🀣🀣

Good luck to you if you decide to join - I’m still working up to it! 🍹🍸🍷xxx

Brilliant I am on my second week on line! I lost 4lbs but to be honest I am fighting the same stone going on and off! I feel better and am eating healthier. But forgot to weigh in this morning so not sure on this weeks progress! Keep us posted πŸ˜€

Sounds familiar! ..Never joined myself to any these programs! You go for it! Hope it works for you! Two stone over myself or even more according the stats!!

It definitely works! I've met some good friends through slimming world. And the recipe books are good. I don't go right now but if my cholesterol is higher again, I may go back as I really don't want to go on statins. Good luck - the first week is the best weight loss usually - one younger girl with a fair amount to lose, lost a whole stone in a week! And then followed up with a massive loss the next. Like PMR, it's not s competition! X

I finally joined SW just after New Year. A new group started within walking distance so I felt my New Year's resolution was made for me. I've done 6 sessions so far and have managed to lose 9.5 lbs (possibly more - I'll find out in an hour when I go to my 7th meeting). I'd like to have lost more, but I'm telling myself that slow and steady wins the race. I certainly find their approach to diet workable. Fortunately I've never liked crisps or any other kind of savoury snack and, having stopped eating sugar in October, I've lost my sweet tooth and the constant day-dreaming about chocolate and cake. In addition I don't drink alcohol or soft drinks. My main strategy is to go for what they call 'savvy syns', i.e. nutritious foods, rather than junk items. For example I'll have a few walnuts, half an avocado or a few sardines. I'm doing my best not to eat any empty calories.

That sounds really good and workable. I hope to do the same. Let’s keep up the good work.

I joined Slimming World online 9 months ago. I had already lost a stone by then following orders from Cardiologist to lose 4 Stone in January 2018. My weight had crept up to 21 and half stone following lengthy period on Predisolone. I had by then already done the heart damage with a leaky valve and AF. Its now a year later and 4 and half stone down. Found slimming world useful mainly from knowing i was being tracked and sort of reminded to weigh at same time every week so the sort of motivation from this did help. Going for another 2 stone but not a slimming world member anymore.

I think slimming world is much better than weight watchers . Easy to follow and delicious recipes . My other half is happy to eat everything I cook .I lost 1 stone 10 pounds in 8 months before my diagnosis , but since starting prednisone in October it's been a real struggle and I've more or less stuck at my current weight which is 8 pounds off target . Does pred weight gradually creep on or does the rate of weight gain increase the longer you are on it ? I'm terrified I'll be having to use my 'fat bird' gear again 😱😩

SuziCutie profile image
SuziCutieβ€’ in reply tokatiemills

Had no problem with weight until PMR/GCA struck. 60mg pred and warned about weight side effect. But so hungry. Here I am 14 months later and 2 stone overweight!!

What I really don’t like is the apparent lack of control not to keep eating. I know it’s doing me harm but keep stuffing my face πŸ˜₯πŸ˜₯

That’s why I have gone public with joining slimming World.

I know have to stick with it or face shame!!!

This is such a lovely supportive group I know I won’t be shamed if I can’t stick to it , hopefully. Haha

Hello Patrice

I too had no (undue) problems with weight pre-pred. When I started on them (60 mg due to GCA and the rapid loss of one eye), the Doc jovially told me that I would soon develop "Moon Face" and a fat tummy.. "Oh No! - Not me!" I thought. So I stopped eating - more or less. Low cal cup soup in the morning and a very small supper. It worked for about ten months, by which time I was down to only about 12 mg preds. Then I started expanding in spite of these efforts.

There is no justice Patrees. -- Anyway, I am now doing weights and steps as a frantic backstop arrangement.

I had always subscribed to the Katie Price philosophy - "Fat people are fat because they put too much stuff in their mouths" - but now I'm not so sure!

In the meantime, I have become addicted to Batchelor's Tomato and Basil cup soup!

So anyway - Good Luck to you - and to me!

I've been a member from before PMR struck!! I had lost 1 1/2 stone then steadily put on the same amount over the last 2years of pmr!! Well is been a real up and down ride but 3 weeks of slimming world and I have lost 5 lbs. took a while to get to grips with it and several family get togethers with tempting foods not allowed!! So quite pleased really.

Going to try hard to stick to the rules and maybe loose another 2lb this week. Reducing pred to 8mg as well!! Also had new hair cut and new specs so it’s a new me hopefully πŸ˜€πŸ˜€

Interested that you have joined SW. I went a few years ago and got almost to my target weight. Pred has been cruel to my weight and I've thought of rejoining but because I've read on here about lowcarb,I don't know how it would work. I remember having been able to eat pasta and lie fat yogurts etc and they are no-nos with lowcarb. Meanwhile I'm getting bigger and bigger 😣 Also wondered about being able to go to weigh ins but you mention online πŸ€” could be a good idea if I could get into the right frame of mind. Does it work for you?

SuziCutie profile image
SuziCutieβ€’ in reply toHollyseden

I have only lost 5lbs in just over 3 weeks. Had a lot of family gatherings so difficult to stick to diet with all that lovely food.

At least my weight is not going up which was so disheartening.

And I know what I should be eating.

I plan to stick at it for my health sake.

I prefer the online app. You just weigh in once a week. Lots of help on line too!

Hollyseden profile image
Hollysedenβ€’ in reply toSuziCutie

Is it easy to adapt to lowcarb? Think I'll definitely look into this. Hadn't thought of the online option. Wouldn't need to worry about making it to meetings. What a great feeling to lose weight on Pred. Well done πŸ‘πŸ‘

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassadorβ€’ in reply toHollyseden

I think it is very easy to adapt to low carb - but each to their own. I find it particularly easy when eating out: extra veg or salad instead of carbs,

Hollyseden profile image
Hollysedenβ€’ in reply toPMRpro

Maybe I've been reading too much into it. Stuff about changing to full fat yogurts and veg that are not lowcarb etc Plus my attention span and memory are shot so I forget so much 😟

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassadorβ€’ in reply toHollyseden

Root veg are quite high in carbs - so using sweet potatoes or parsnips instead of spuds doesn't help! But above ground veg are generally lower in carbs. Low fat yoghurts, so beloved of dieters, actually have a lot of sugar added to make up for the lack of flavour. Natural yogs don't have additives including sugar - so add berries as your own flavouring and you keep them low carb. The using "normal" fat products is because that fills you up better so you don't crave quick carb energy.

This site has lots of very simple info - and the visual guides make it really easy to see what veggies etc should be avoided and which you can eat to your heart's content:

dietdoctor.com/low-carb/ket...

I find SW very confusing - my daughter uses it. Keeping carbs in check is easy for me.

What annoyed me when I went to RC classes was that I did really well at first - and then was given a totally unrealistic goal which I never attained so I continued paying the full wack. If I had been able to go to more than one exercise class I wouldn't have minded so much but it was MILES to the next group. I don't see why I should pay my money into someone else's bank account when cutting carbs is free!

β€’ in reply toPMRpro

That’s my thought, you could put that money in a Pot & buy a New Dress πŸ‘— when you’d lost weight! I don’t think l could be β€˜shamed’ into losing weight, l might get upset 😒 or be embarrassed!
