I've done pretty well on my own with the diet and lifestyle changes but for a while now I've been looking for an expert Functional Medicine doctor/practitioner and on Friday I had my first appointment with a woman who was recommended by a couple of friends. I'm SO glad I did!
She's a real gem and I feel very optimistic about working with her. My GP and Rheumy are both wonderful but their knowledge and expertise is limited, as is their time! So it's fantastic and such a relief to speak with someone who is so deeply knowledgeable about the fine details of my symptoms, meds and supplements, diet and lifestyle etc and who will take time to study the all particular pieces of my specific personal health puzzle.
She's already identified some key things I wasn't aware of and is going through all my medical records and test results with a very fine tooth comb. She'll also be doing new tests of various things the NHS peeps don't look at in any depth, if at all - stool, urine, saliva, blood, temperature...you name it!
She also wants me back on full AIP elimination diet immediately for at least a month, but for now I can keep the eggs and 85% dark choc and my one daily organic coffee....yay!
So here I go... 💉🦠🧪🌡💩...🤣

So glad you’ve connected with a medical professional that meets your needs and is willing to collaborate with you. And yes, I can imagine your eggs, coffee and chocolate are prize daily nourishment.
That's awesome. I still have to explain what that is over here. A Functional Practitioners assessment would have been quite useful at the beginning an autoimmune diagnosis.
xdbx how did you go about finding a functional medicine practitioner? Is there a professional organization or word of mouth or the great google? Thanks.
In the US, there is an organization called the Institute for Functional Medicine. It has a website with a link to find a practitioner in your area. I'm not sure if the same kind of resource exists abroad.
Congratulations on finding a practitioner who can help you get to the root of the problem instead of just treating it. I have found one as well, but haven't made an appointment with her. Your post gives me the motivation to give her a call! I've been on the AIP diet (but have kept eggs and 85% chocolate, as well as an occasional glass of red wine) for a few months now. I've been able to reduce my prednisone to 5mg/day (down from 20) with no ill effects. I would like someone to guide me on this journey who is well-versed in creating health. I have the same situation as you with a good GP and rheumy, but they just don't know enough about wellness, and how to create it. Please keep us posted on what you're learning! I'm VERY interested!
