Had a wonderful family vacation at Woodloch Pines resort in Hawley, Pa. However, I have a pain on the left side only, from knee to ankle. It’s worse going up and down stairs and with most exercise.. Rheumie is happy I’m decreasing to 3 mg Pred and recommended an MD Physiotherapist at Columbia Presbyterian. Appointment is not until end of November. I have ASIC sneakers, use cushie socks and have orthotics from years ago I will try. Any ideas from my fellow sufferers? Thanks so much,

Boy. I don't know.. I suspected shingles (in your other post on someone else's page) because that is exactly what my friend had. ..any redness? If not. it could be shin splints if it is in front? Is it there. And shin splints are Ice Ice Ice. or is it on the outside (where I think the shingles would be) Do ankle rotations hurt? LOVE the photo. YOU look terrific! Who's the man dressed up as a cute guy? your son?
I don't even want to say it... but could it be another stress fracture?? I know you had them in your feet... maybe in the leg? ugh. I sure hope not. Get thee to a doctor!
See below...response to Good Grief re. stenosis... He wants me to swim, row, bike, upper body weights and some leg machines. All things I hate. I told him I will probably do African dance and low impact Zumba. He said to let pain be my guide! Nor’easter here. Going to NY for lunch date at a fancy restaurant. Enjoyed yesterday’s lunch date. This month I specialize in widowers!
Just coming out of a chest infection that seems to have set me back a bit pain and flexibility wise. So much better than last year though, I forget. Thanks for asking.
I'm going to take a walk on the wild side here and suggest you change your shoes. I find that when I wear the same pair for a long stretch, or wear the same pair for several days in a row, I can develop aches and pains that go away just by switching thngs up during the day and between days.
You might also try going up half a mg until this resolves itself. And, of course, alternating cool and heat patches, along with plenty of comfy chair time with it propped up comfortably.
Thanks for the good suggestions. I will try them next week. My ASICS are relatively new but I will buy another pair to switch off. I appreciate your help.
I would consider a different type of shoe altogether. I noticed last winter that wearing the same pair of snow boots for a few days in a row was causing "fatigue" pain in one foot and the opposite knee. Switching to another type of shoe made a big difference, but I was having different aches from them. Switching back and forth every day seemed to zap the problem. This may or may not work for your problem.
In any case, hope you find a solution soon. And don't forget, our new body lotion, Aspercreme, sometimes does the trick for non-PMR aches and pains that develop from us compensating for its issues.
Thanks to you I got 3 pairs of shoes! Yes, I do feel better when I rotate them. In addition to waiting a month for the appointment with a physiotherapist, I made an appointment with an orthopedist in Englewood who specializes in backs. At times, I have a pain in the lower back area. Rheumatlogist thought pain originated from my back. Always a new challenge!
Saw orthopedist yesterday. Pain is radiating from my back...stenosis. He gave me Mobic and prescription for PT. He thinks inflammation may have intensified with lower doses of Pred (3mg). Hopefully, I will be better in a month. If not, He has more aggressive ideas...epidural.
Meanwhile, I got 3 pairs of new shoes thanks to your great advice!
Never thought of a different type of shoe. Since I retired and spend every day in the gym I’m always in sneakers, I get a new pair every 4 months...usually New Balance or ASICS. I’ll give your suggestion a try. Didn’t know about the cream. Thanks.
Actually, I haven’t noticed since I generally lay on my back or left side. However, I will consciously try the right side and get back to you! Thanks for the suggestion!
I can’t lay on the opposite side to my problem aggrevates too much - funny how it eases to lay on it - seeing physio on Wednesday for the third time.....
Bit of a story - on first visit no, exercises given exacerbated it - they changed them and all was going well. I then started Aquarobics, with Physio and GP’s blessing - it was a disaster - after three sessions had to stop as set off a flare which is not settling. Now three weeks later so made physio appt after seeing GP and upping Pred - it is getting better but is so slow, it has certainly set me back a lot. My problem start higher than yours, starts at the hip and goes down outer leg to knee (knee feels twisted) with numb patches in various places down to big toe! I think its coming from lower back - x-rays show disc narrowing. One Physio said an MRI might be needed but another said no. Am seeing the ‘MRI’ one again so will wait and see. I’ve been so well in these areas for so long.
Definitely the Aquarobics didn’t do me any good yet I enjoyed them and it was toning me up in those few weeks.
Hope you get to know what’s wrong with you, seems to be all trial and error!
Sorry you had a hard time. Water Aerobics seems like fun but not for me. I like Zumba and weight classes. Hope you continue to improve. Even though I’m down to 3 mg Pred I get tired in the afternoon and go to bed early.
Thank you. It’s seems to be par for the course doesn’t it. You’re doing well with your fitness regime. I’m doing Tai Chi and seems to be okay - I find it relaxing - according to TV last week it’s equal to a Zumba workout! Did you see it? The tiredness does come back which seems strange - I wonder if it’s the adrenals still making their mind up! Wish I could go to bed early I seem to fight it. Plus caring for hubby I like an hour to myself. You’re doing well on 3mg - I got there for 17 months then had a flare in April and struggling to get back down but will.
I had pain like that, knee down the outside of my calf from a dislocated fibula, one of the bones from the knees down the outside of the knee. I didn’t know that was the problem, but I felt something “go” when I was slipping into my middle seat on an airplane. For the next two weeks I limped along on vacation. Saw my GP who shrugged. My osteopath fixed it in a minute. Problem gone. I hope your problem has an easy fix.
