Yes. I had a bad knee to begin with (torn meniscus), but after starting on Pred, I developed a Bakers Cyst. I've had drained by the Rheumy once already, about 3 months ago, but it needs to be drained again. Good luck!!!

Thanks for your reply mamici1, i had the Bakers Cysts before PMR was diagnosed, but am glad to hear that they are possibly connected, was beginning to think I was on a downward slope.

I wish you well

I've heard a few people with PMR say they have a Baker's cyst but no idea if there is a connection.

I suppose that if your PMR is causing bursitis in the knee (and it can whatever some rheumies might say) then it could also lead to a Baker's cyst developing.

These doctors thought so, saying peripheral synovitis is a feature of PMR:

Wish a few more doctors agreed with them!!!!

Hi PMRpro

Thanks for your comments. I now feel better about the Bakers Cysts, because up until now I was quite concerned as to why I could have them, especially in both knees!! I was not diagnosed with PMR until six weeks

after the first one. Am so pleased I joined this forum it has helped me feel a whole lot better knowing I am not on my own with this condition, and hearing how others cope .

Until April I had not even heard of PMR, now I am learning about it everyday.

Thanks for your help

I’ve also had problems with my knees. I’ve had PMR for 2.5 years and knees only started joining in about 10 months ago. Weren’t sore daily until past few months. Definitely feel a bakers cyst behind one knee and mentioned it to GP so have just had an X-ray of both knees and am awaiting results. When I first mentioned knee discomfort to my rheumy he suggested it might be to do with weight gain! I’ve only gained about 2kg and I still manage to walk daily. I despaired at him. There was never any mention of bursitis, synovial fluid inflammation etc. I’ve only discovered this on here.

I do find paracetamol helps a bit so it might be more mechanical than PMR but has it been caused by the PMR or the steroids?? May never know!

I’ll let you know outcome of X-rays.

Hi Lochy

Thanks for your reply, I had the Bakers Cysts and hip Bursitis before I

started the steroids, so I can’t put the blame there.

My real side effect is the bruising, my arms and legs look as though a tattooist has been practicing on them, and pretty badly at that !!

Oh well, can’t have everything in this life.....

I wish you well

Oh yes the same tattooist has been practicing on me too. The most innocuous knocks can end up with red blotches etc

I do look like I’ve been in the wars at times.

I have bakers cysts leaking to ankles in both knees no reason for this as I haven't exercised at all. Relief to hear it's the PMR I was afraid that now I do nothing to get knee pain.

I know how you feel, I didn’t have the Bakers Cysts at the same time, and with the first one I was really worried. my ankle was like a balloon, and the pain was really something else!

I wish you well
