It is a cliche I know - about how children are very direct and honest in ways we as adults can never really be again - but like many cliches it contains many elements of 'truth'. Children frequently say what they are thinking in such an 'unadulterated' way - until we start to inhibit them with all the rules, regulations and conditioning required in/by our societies - 'skewing' them in directions and imposing 'structures' we ourselves have forgotten exist and influence our lives. But aren't there true moments of sheer delight when they blurt out something about the 'elephants in the room' and we wriggle and feel relieved SOMEONE has 'said' something ... well i'm sure you all know what i mean ...
Anyway just a preamble to the attached 'portrait' of 'myself' very quickly done by my grand daughter on a commute to the city for visit to the Art Gallery. While I have seen her rescue, glue back together and beautifully paint a broken metal flamingo bird statue from a refuse collection and paint and draw some truly great pics - this by comparison is quite a 'juvenile' sketch by her - but it is an honest and (for me) 'compelling' one as it really DOES actually look a lot like me - including the acquired Pred cheeks !!
I am just so very happy she sees me as I feel I (really) 'am'

She’s caught your essence because she loves you. With you all the way on the way the pure, delightful, honesty of children gets trammelled by adults. Sophie must be adorable, a constant flow of joy, lots of creative energy - like “Grand” of course.💛🧡

Wouldn’t it be lovely if we could answer as young children do? They can tell the truth and nobody would give them a cold shoulder. Rarely are their comments, or drawings, nasty.
I met an old friend the other day and she said “Oh you really look good. Glad you’ve got over that PM thingy”.
Lovely Rimmy, she's knows how to capture the detail, how old is she? If they have a flare it doesn't leave them. My granddaughter used to draw lots when younger and have kept them all, some I've framed, she's now studying architectural design at uni.
She is 9 and as I mentioned she didn't do her usual detail on this drawing but treated more like a 'cartoon' or caricature even - I think the impact of digital imagery is clearly already 'there' - but I am thinking that is now globally 'implicit' in nearly all children's perceptions ... I am pleased to say she does fantastic animal modelling and has a real flare with a paint brush.
For her to have that ability to sketch as she has is special, and more so that she didn't do her 'usual detail'. I agree about children's perceptions but there aren't many that can transfer them into drawings. I could not draw for toffee we still laugh about the 'dogs' I tried to draw for my children - a mixture of a cow, dog and something else.... I used to think my g'daughter traced her drawings as she was only 3 when she first started. As she grew it transformed into painting - she drew two for school as they were having a charity evening, framed them the lot and the local council bought them for $250 dollars each - she was 8.
She now makes clothes, decorates/redesigns her bedroom endless times etc etc thankfully she is good at finding a bargain! - good job otherwise it can be expensive. So prepare for something good it is a gift she has.
I love the emotions you express. I think all of us with grandchildren will have felt like this. The real skill of an artist is to catch the essence of the person and she appears to have to done this. What a priceless work of art.

The earrings are absolutely accurate - turquoise and silver and articulated with little silver loops just as she pictured them - and thanks we had a ball !!
