Has anyone heard of diatomaceous earth food grade? it sounds good for stronger teeth, hair and skin (as well as killing ants) but it is used as a dettox taken on an empty stomach in the morning but would it have a bad effect on prednisolone if you were to take after the DE

Hello, I only know of this be because I use it as dust in my dove’s pop holes to prevent mites because the tiny sharp, dead silica coated creatures get inside the mite. Anyway, I had a read and am not sure how it manages to be both a purgative and a supplement at the same time. Why not just eat a good diet with plenty of fibre?

Because of its alleged purgative properties I wouldn’t therefore take it near to Pred by at least two hours for uncoated or 5 hours for coated, but that’s just my opinion.

Have a read of this:

which presents the other side of the story.

Most efficacious in every way 🤮

SnazzyD, almost afraid to ask.... What are pop holes?

Must dash..... off to get my colon sandpapered 😉

According to google they are the holes on a dove cote. Who knew...

Careful with that sandpapering ;-)

I had visions of it being part of a bird’s anatomy 😳

Oh, doves’ bedrooms in their dove cote! No sphincters involved!

Thanks for that. 🤗Wasn't convinced. Just slightly tempted when they say the benefits are, stronger teeth, faster growing hair and nails and a beautiful smooth skin. But then when it kills ants and other mites it makes you double take about drinking it.😂😂😂

I still have very sensitive teeth but have just got down to 5mg working very slowly but feeling very well. Hope I can keep going😊😊

I assume you have tried toothpaste for sensitive teeth? I tried all sorts but only Sensodyne worked.

Yes I have my dentist recommended rubbing my teeth with the paste but i really cant face he grittyness

HeronNS profile image

If the toothpaste feels gritty it's too gritty. I use a colgate for sensitive teeth as sensodyne makes my mouth sore, must be sensitive to one of the ingredients. Dentist says use ultra soft toothbrush, or even get an electric one which will stop me from brushing my teeth too hard. I'm not sure if it really is a factor but my teeth have become much less sensitive since I started taking Vitamin K2. I take 200 mcg a day (two capsules of my supplement) and when I took only one capsule my teeth got sensitive again, but it could be coincidence. I noticed the difference after a couple of months so not a quick thing.

I can't say I have ever noticed grittiness in Sensodyne. But they do have a gel which is definitely not gritty and I like Pronamel - which I can't feel any grittiness in, just tried!

Diatomaceous earth is used to rip open the flesh of snails as they head towards your plants. They are the fossilized remains of diatoms and apparently consist of majorly important elements like silica, calcium, magnesium, iron, and more.

I think it contains trace elements such as manganese, zinc and copper, also silica. I think they are saying zinc helps teeth, hair and skin. I am sure that there other things that can help too.

Yes i take k2, 1 capsule from holland and barrett. I think I will increase the dose see if it helps my teeth hadn't thought of that. Holland & Barrett now sell it as a spray for in the mouth.

Back to the ant killer diatomaceous earth I read that it's a silica, that's why it makes the skin shine and hair grow but i am not going to try it😉😉😉

I'd rather get my silica from leafy plants!

Just eat jelly for your hair and nails. I stopped using an electric toothbrush as my teeth were aching, not as in toothache. I get a prescribed, expensive toothpaste, from my dentist, called Duraphat 5000,fluoride toothpaste, by Colgate, and use a soft manual toothbrush. She also had a mouth guard measured and made, to prevent tooth clenching at bed-time.

Gelatin is a low grade protein, I think it's a myth it helps produce keratin any better than any other protein....

I'm just remembering that my nails were better a year ago than they are now. Thinking about what I've been doing I think they responded to the iron supplements. Maybe my iron is low again. As my doctor doesn't want to see me again until next year maybe I'll just put myself back on iron anyway.

Aren't you on a slightly higher pred dose than a year ago? I and several others all found our nails were better than they had ever been in our lives when we were on pred or higher doses of pred (in my case above about 10mg).

HeronNS profile image
HeronNS in reply toPMRpro

Except for a few weeks last year to deal with the minor flare I've been at 3 or below for a couple of years. My nails never got particularly good, although I hoped they would, and thinking back they were indeed best after I'd been on the iron for a while, but of course that was when I'd also been at higher dose of pred. Not going to take pred for nails!

I brush DE through my dog's coats every few weeks if they start scratching, rids them of fleas without using horrible chemicals. Can also be used as a wormer (or dewormer!) for horses, again in place of chemicals, but I haven't tried that yet. I have read of the internal 'benefits' for humans but also not been tempted yet!

Would it work on cats also?

angiek profile image
angiek in reply toRosbud

Yes it would. Just have to brush a small amount through the coat (I use my fingers), outside and making sure any breeze is blowing away from pets head so they don't inhale it or get it in eyes. It does make their coats look a bit dull for a few days.

HeronNS in reply toangiek

Even though cats groom themselves and will ingest it?

angiek profile image
angiek in reply toHeronNS

Apparently it is very safe even for cats to ingest, but I am only going by the many testimonials on different group pages, I don't have cats. I can only say I have used it against fleas on my dogs, and have occasionally added some to their food, and they have been flea free for at least a year without using chemicals. There is a lot of info on this site- this is the link for cats diatomaceousearth.com/blogs...
