Morning everyone (at least it is here).💥😎

Has anyone had any funny querks (is that a word)?!? with food or drink?

Shortly after starting pred (40mg) I went off tea - can you imagine that, an English woman going off TEA? I drank at least 8 cups a day, very strong with milk and sugar. I now drink very very weak tea with no milk ans sugar. My husband brings me a cup of tea in bed every morning, often with the words

ooer! What happened there? “Your dishwater, madam”.

I have often gone off things for a few weeks, then gone back to normal. The latest one is meat. I always used to think a meal without meat was not a proper meal. For about six months now I really can’t stand it in my mouth. It’s the texture not the taste. I am now a very unwilling veggie! I love cooking so I can vary meals quite a lot and cook meat for my husband and pinch the juice or sauce.

What next? Going off veg - then what?

I too have had problems with tea but also food just does not taste the same! Even a glass of wine tastes different The one thing that has always been good is chocolate! Just what I need to keep weight down! The food taste is now improving as down to 10mg from 60mg hopefully that will happen for you. Rae

Oh - forgot about wine, brandy, whisky, etc etc - don’t like any of them any more.😡 I’ve had PMR for 6 years now, down to 3mg of pred so don’t think things will change now. Apart from that, I’m alive and still try to “kick”😂😂

I have had a bad taste for the last year, it almost feels waxy. I don't drink tea (I am English! ) so I can't comment but it makes my black coffee taste creamy which I hate. As I had been on pred for over a year by then I put it down to the zoldronate infusion. A year later when the infusion is due to be topped up, the bad taste is easing so perhaps that's it. I am on a much lower dose than you during this time, max 20mg. Hope this helps.

You haven't had oral thrush have you?

No obvious signs, both dentist and hygenist found nothing.

I have also gone off meat since diagnosed 2 months ago. Haven't bought any, and thrown out any from fridge. It is fish of all sorts and sizes for me now, when previously was not so keen. A plus as healthier and have given up carbs to try to combat Pred Gain. Just hope it doesn't go into reverse, as I don't have a lot of will power if my body tells my brain I really really need it. 🍞

Luckily I like fish too. Like Balfron I also like chocolate, never ate it before PMR. Strange illness!!😏😏

It certainly is, haven't got on to chocolate, yet, but I am drinking far more tea. Hope it can change a few more things for the better. It has started to rain here this morning, after wonderful hot week, and I feel better, brighter and pain free, I hope that I am not going to favour rain in future☔️☔️☹️although we do get rather a lot of it.

Where do you live. Marymon? Weather is another one of my moans. I have PMR and Polyarthritis. I had a really rough winter (pain, hospital stays, etc etc) and was really looking forward to spring/summer. We have had amazing weather since March ( I live in Germany) and I thought my pain level would be much better with the warmth, it isn’t.😡

I really wonder how people in Australia cope with their hot weather.

It's horribly humid though Constance - and rheuma of any sort doesn't like damp...

I don't know how I would have coped if it was not for airconditioning. Just walking to the letter box I would start sweating. Winter starts tomorrow. I am not looking forward to it because of arthritis. The sun is shining through my lounge window presently. It rained during the night but has been a lovely day.

I also live a 5 minute drive from a lovely beach. I believe we are very fortunate to live in Australia

Hi shazatep. (I’d love to know where all the unusual names people choose come from). Privacy, I know!

As PMRpro mentioned it’s damp heat here. We are getting a load of sun this Spring (and up to 28 degs) - nothing to you I suppose, but to me - horrid. Give me 23 degs.

A combination of first and last name. Sheryl - people often call me Shaz, Stephens being surname - shortened to step.

I find anything under 30 degs is ok. 23 degs would be good for this time of year. I think those living in Perth are having temperatures similar to that. I think our temp today is around 18 degs. The sun is shining so it feels warm.

How are your sinuses. It's usually the snoz that's to blame when tastes go weird. Also sinus sprays make smell and tastes weird.

Can’t blame sinuses, not after 6 years.😏

My tastes in wine changed - with pred I think, not the PMR. Much prefer good solid whites now rather than the thinner dry ones I used to like. A really fruity Franken Bacchus and even Gewuerztraminer go down well.

But have developed a taste for Campari which I used to hate!

I went off wine of every sort, much to my (and D’s) annoyance. It was so lovely to sit together in the evening drinking and chatting away. Not the same with milk!😡

I went off chocolate and wine after chemo years ago......but it's ok, I persisted 😂 Now because I am trying to cut down carbs, my body is being belligerent and I have gone into craving overdrive. Tried thinking double negative ie I must eat carbs but suddenly my mind became very compliant. At least we woke up this morning, just saying 🤣

Constance13 profile image
Constance13 in reply to Angiejnz

Love the “double negative”.😂

I have no trouble with carbs, the odd potato, chips once in a while, cake quite often (you just CAN’T resist German gateaux)🍰.

I took 10 kilos off after a while on pred (one of the lucky ones). I put on 4 kilos in the following years but after another long (ill) winter I have lost another 7 kilos.

Definitely. Food tastes different.I'm tempted to add more salt than I should as it all tastes bland. Cold drinks seem luke warm and hot drinks are never hot enough.

Constance13 profile image
Constance13 in reply to AliDeJ

For years I used lo-salt (recommended at that time) or NO salt. When in hospital last November they had to give me salt tablets (daily) because the sodium level in my blood was far too low. When I got home I stopped the tablets and now I just use salt as and when needed.

Hi Constance13, Yes my sense of taste, smell and hearing are all off. I was seeing an ENT a year before the GCA hit, as I had lots of sinus issues, but after going on the Pred, the sinuses cleared up but I lost my senses! Go figure.

Constance13 profile image

I’ve given up with “senses”😂 of all kinds now!!! How can you find sense with this illness?

Whoops! Newly diagnosed with polymyalgia so on a learning curve. We have had lovely weather here in North West England and nothing better than to sit outside in the garden of an evening with a nice cold glass of wine. I keep complaining to my husband about buying cheap white wine as it tastes awful. So it's me then! What with that and the pain in the groin it reminds me of my pregnancy 40 years ago!

One of the things we miss most in England is Sunday dinner in a pub, especially lamb. We miss all the little villages in the Cotswolds and Yorkshire. Other things, of course, but one can’t have everything and we love living in this part of Germany.

Yep after prednisone and methotrexate Coffee is very bitter. Started using sugar then decided I just don't need the coffee so I pretty much quit drinking it. Tea isn't bitter, I just don't seem to have a taste for it. Lots of water and Lemonade. Craving Lemonade.
